i am about to get paid and buy a laptop, think i am going to get macbook.
am i right in thinking that mac os x is multilingual so if all the menus are in korean they can be easily changed to english? will it be the same for all the programs that come with it?
so i can just buy it and not worry about getting and 'english' version like i would if i was to buy a laptop with windows?
cheers |

i'm wondering the same thing... i heard that it was okay but i need someome to confirm it.
i'm tempted to buy one before i leave (since it's cheaper to buy it in korea), and my mid-2005 iBook is acting up lately. |

While you install OS X you can choose the language you prefer to use. Furthermore, even after everything is installed, you can change the menu language easily. No worries there.

PS. For your notice, I have MBP and my gf has MB and an older PB. No problems with changing the language as far as I remember.

If you can hold off for a few more days I strongly suggest you wait till the end of September. Apple is releasing the new upgraded macbooks and macbook pros this month.

Thanks for the post Sody. My wife was going to buy a new MacBook this week. Might be worthwhile to hang on a bit.
Smitchlovesfunk, if you work at a public school I know for definite that you can get an education discount on a new MacBook from the online store. Not too sure if the same applies for hagwons. In any case the discount is usually about 100,000 won.
This is the direct link to the education site on the Korean online store:
http://store.apple.com/kr-k12
The prices already include the discount.
Edit: (If the link takes you to the US website (it shouldn't), use this link: http://store.apple.com/kr and then go to the bottom of the page and click on the "Education" link, which is located to the left of the "International" link) |

Either way, it's a good deal, although I'd suggest picking up a new one as it will be at the same price point as those already available. Apple's Korean store might close out the current-gen Macbooks online. |

Apple has a decent return policy if new models are released. A friend-o-mine bought an MBP 2 weeks before a new release. Apple paid for the courier pick-up, and replaced his computer in favor of the new model.
I'm not sure how far back they will be willing to replace an old model, but as I said, he bought his 2 weeks before a new release. |

When I got mine last year I had to wait about a month after the new version was released in the US. But if you do not mind getting the older versions they will be on sale at the stores, or at least that is how it was at the store in Busan. |

My wife ordered a new MacBook yesterday through the Apple Korea online store.
They gave her the name and direct contact number for an English-speaker there. It's Cho Yong Jin. Number: 080 3404 622, extension 41037
She ordered the MacBook, got her education discount, and transferred the payment via ATM. We're expecting it by tomorrow. Easy-peasy. |

I'm a mac-tragic, and (fairly) recent convert. I will never EVER go back to Windows hell.
That said, be aware that you may have to for some things. Korean websites, in particular, are terrible. Most are loaded with ActiveX crap and security plugins that do nothing but make your system more vulnerable. They WILL NOT WORK with anything other than IE. That includes Firefox, Camino, etc. etc.
I like to shop online. I do most of my travel research online. These two factors forced me to install a copy of XP on my mac. I run it under VMWare flawlessly, but it still shits me to no end that I'm forced to use it at all.
Be prepared to be frustrated! |
