I've searched online but have run around in circles. Has anyone on here taken the General GRE test in Seoul? Where did you go and how did you go about registering?

I've called a few places today, but could not get much relevant information.

So Koreans only take the GRE those two times a year?!? There must be some other place that offers it right?

I'm pretty sure you can do it at Yonsei as well but I don't know when or where. Last year my co worker did it in August. He did the reasoning part first then a week later he had to go back to do the writing? I don't know how it was set up. Sadly, I don't speak to him, we didn't get off to well. Can't offer any more advice for you, sorry.

Or you can take a trip to Osaka/Tokyo and pretty much take the GRE CBT twice a day any day of the week: Prometric GRE

Yikes....I hope I don't have to travel over to Japan again JUST to take the GRE. I mean I like Japan and all, but I'd rather take the test here.

Quick update for people looking to take the October 27th GRE.

I registered for it yesterday. The number for the testing center is 1566-0090.
You have to take the first part (analytical writing portion) by September 19th in order to take the rest of the exam on October 27th.

When I called, the lady who answered spoke English very well and even e-mailed me directions to the testing center in Mapo-gu.

The cost is $195, I believe. If you change testing dates, fees are incurred, but $195 beats the hell out of a trip to Osaka or Tokyo.

just a quick fyi - make sure your grad program requires it - not all of them do - before you put yourself thru it - but good luck either way -

I was totally traumatized the last time I took the GRE - was stil recovering from 9/11 (I lived in Manhattan) and was literally in the process of applying to grad school - my gre was in dec - started out ok then went into this section where the questions were the type - if x does this, then what does y do, and where is w, etc etc?? except the theme was about fire and firetrucks - as in there's a big emergency and firetrucks are responding and if x firetruck goes here, and y firemen go there...

all I heard were sirens and people sobbing and the rest was a nightmare to finish - needless to say I didn't do too well

Reviving this thread because I'm thinking of taking the GRE here this fall, but I don't know if it's possible to start studying now and still do well. I'd like to apply for grad school for next fall, and the places I'm applying do require the GRE, but I just started looking into taking the test in Korea and now time is kind of tight.

So my question is - how much studying does the analytical writing require and then will I be able to study for the rest in about a month? I took a class about 5 years ago that was a math review for the GRE, but haven't done any since and that's always my weakest point. Plus I just arrived back in Seoul and will be just starting my new job next week. Should I just plan to go to Japan to do it after a few months of studying?

Also, whether I do it here or in Japan, I do need to study, so if anyone else wants to study together, PM me! I'm not entirely sure where I'll be living yet, but somewhere in the south west of Seoul.

Hey, I'm just curious if there are any other people who are planning on taking the GRE this year?

Does anyone recommend a location in Seoul to take it?

Also any study tips, and what you found most difficult about the test? I know nothing about this test.

it's a standardized test - the most difficult part I found is that now it's on a computer where it wasn't in the past - so there's no leafing thru and picking and choosing - I really didn't like the computer aspect of it at all.

different portions are difficult for different people - I have a science degree and found it mostly dubious, ambiguous and inconsistent at best. the verbal section is ridiculous, IMO as well.

Princeton Review is considered the best book prep, Baron's is next. go online and read about the test, do the studies and then take the practice exams yourself - definitely.

the analytical seems difficult at first but is a snap after you learn the way these work - which is covered in the prep material.

no way should you take it w/o a practice exam first is my best advice.

Does anyone know if Computer Based Tests are available in Korea?

It seems silly that it would not be, because the written test is only given twice a year. And knowing Koreans, that probably would not be enough for them.

So what gives?

I don't want to fly to Japan for a test, not the reason I would want to go there.

I'm hoping to take it in June in Gwangju. Has anybody had any luck registering online? Or do you have to call the number posted up there?

For the test in June, when do you get the scores back?

Anyone know when the registration deadline is?

No, the computer-based isn't available. The analytical writing section is computer based, however, the qualitative and quantitative sections are all paper-based. If you have the time and money, you can fly to Japan where the computer-based is offered much more frequently.
There's only one place in Seoul where it is offered.

You can't register online.
Call the number.
If you're taking it in June, you'll have to take part one about in April-May, so I wouldn't wait too long to register.
