Have any of you used apology letters in class as punishment for a bad class? I just had a first grade high school class that was unbelievably awful. I was thinking of having them write me a full page letter apologizing for their bad behavior (no dictionaries allowed while writing the letter).
I'm just wondering if these are effective or if I should make them do something harder?

i have a better idea. Plastic hammer (preferably one that makes squealing sound when used on top of little Klingon heads)
and better yet.... watergun.bigger the better.
this may not be your style and I can respect that, but in an atmosphere where korean teachers whack them for gross misbehavior or make them stand against all in pushup position or whack the undersides of their feet with sticks.
you expect them to feel ASHAMED for writing an apology letter?
what kind of alternate universe do you live in?
on the other hand, should this amazingly work, let me know |

| My bad. I forgot the l on apology. I wanted to avoid being like the Koreans by resorting to even using a plastic hammer. But if things get worse I just may have to try that out. |

| Write a simple little letter in Korean about rude behavior. Send it to their Mom. |

Those things are more effective if you unsrew the accordian hammer and just use the handle.
At any rate, I doubt that half the students in many of my good classes would be capable of writing a one-page letter in English. Make them write out a sheet of lines instead. |

actually my HS students love that thing.
unlike the teacher sticks it doesn't actually hurt, but it's funny.
ditto watergun.
they turn into squealing snitches ratting on their talking or sleeping friends, so they can get whacked or shot... and they get to laugh. |

| It's best just to close all the windows and turn on a fan until they calm down. |

Any guarantee mom will ever see taht letter.
Even if they do, will mom even know what the hell the letter says. The student could just as well say, "Look mom, its the teacher congratulating me for being a good student." |

I was thinking of having my coteacher translate what I wrote into Korean.
It's a long shot it would work. |

You know you can change that: Go back to your first post, hit 'edit' up in the top right corner of the window and then add the 'l'. |
