Hey Everybody,

I just got to Seoul on Saturday, but I don't have a computer... I really need to buy one as soon as possible - does anybody have one to sell for a reasonable price? I am just planning on using it for watching movies and using the internet, maybe Microsoft office as well, but other than that I don't need anything brand new.

Also, what is a reasonable price for a brand new laptop if I go to a store? I am new here, I need help please!

Brand new laptops are a tad more expensive in Korea than in the US. One of the best places to buy a laptop is Yongsan electronics market (Yongsan). Technomart (close Gangbyeon, Jamsil) is your other option but they are a little more expensive than Yongsan. There is also the Kukje Electronics store (close to Gangnam).
Where do you live in Seoul?

An entry level laptop will cost you about 800k won.

An entry level desktop (NEW) will cost you 200k won at Seon-in plaza (yongsan) and you can add another 100-150k for a LCD monitor. I have a used CRT monitor you can have for free if you want to come to Seohyun station to pick it up.

Ttom the info on the laptops is a bit wrong.

Went to Yongsan with a mate to help buy a laptop last weekend.
Got a bit better than entry level, with bag, mouse, extra gig of ram etc. all in cost about 750K. (was HP)

If you wanted to scrape the bottom of the barrel on a new machine you could have gotten something for around 600K.

The way the prices of new laptops have been falling I think you could get a good deal on a used one too. There are a lot of places selling used ones at Yongsan and with the recent drop in prices on new ones I don't see so many people browsing the used ones anymore.

I live in Nowon-gu, a block away from the number 7 line. The subway is so fast here that I am willing to go pretty much anywhere in the city to get a laptop (I come from a city with a terrible transit system so I find the one in Seoul so fast!).

I've been trying to build a new system online - either through GMarket or Danawhatsitcalled. I'm having trouble understanding what is what anymore. It's been many years and I'm kind of out of date when regards to all the latest motherboards, processors, graphic cards, etc. I just need an entry level system (or a bit above) including a cheap LCD for 500k or less.. Smile

Go the Yong Son they have systems advertised in front of the stores that they'll build while u wait. All different price ranges. U can get a dual core entry level system for 275,000 and a decent 22' flat screen lcd for another 225,000 (TopSync OR2204WB). Also, since they build it for u u can get more disk space and ram for cost, just bargain for it.

I have a Thinkpad T40 that I'll sell you.

Pentium M Centrino 1.5ghz
100GB 5400rpm Seagate Hard Drive
1.2GB of RAM
Internal Wireless A/B/G
DVD/CD drive (Not a writer)
Extra battery that fits in the DVD drive bay

This thinkpad has a couple cosmetic cracks and scratches. Very minor. Everything works great. I'm typing on it right now as we speak. This is a IBM Thinkpad, before Lenovo took over the Thinkpad brand and turned it to cheap crap.

Even though its not a dual core CPU, it runs everything well. The 1.2GB of RAM and XP helps everything run smooth and fast.

These things sell for over $300 on eBay. i'll sell it for 280,000w due to the upgraded RAM, HD, and wireless card.

Let me know. PM.

Thanks, Tom.

For someone 3 months in, you give a lot of helpful, near canonical, sage advice.
