This week's (extraordinarily dull and irrelevant to their lives) lesson is about poems and letters. I have a few ideas on how to do a lesson about poetry that would be task-based and hopefully not too boring, but I'm searching for a suitable poem that's not too long with few idioms that are hard to translate.

Any ideas would be most appreciated.

A bit off topic, but I have had students write their own acrostic poems for lessons and they've been a hit.

Study

Students are miserable
Tons of stress
Ultimate goal is just to get into University
Dying boys and girls!
You can do it, cheer up.

Mr. Nobody
They will understand it if you explain it to them.

You could be a little risky and play this very "plain" poem about style. http://kr.youtube.com/watch?v=2GsYFk5zIik

Or how about Billy Collins. His stuff is very accessible. I have on our youtube channel many video poems of his. Just get the original poems script for a handout....

You might even get them to do this style/kind of poem. Brainstorm first words they think of about Korea, when thinking of Korea. Hand it out. They fill it out in pairs/groups. Then present as a poem. I've taught Korean teachers to do this in their classrooms and it's been done quite successfully if somewhat dumbed down from this form.

Have you looked at poems by Shel Silverstein? Most of his work is about the level you wish to teach.

Quote:
Boa Constrictor by Shel Silverstein

Oh, I'm being eaten
By a boa constrictor,
A boa constrictor,
A boa constrictor,
I'm being eaten by a boa constrictor,
And I don't like it--one bit.
Well, what do you know?
It's nibblin' my toe.
Oh, gee,
It's up to my knee.
Oh my,
It's up to my thigh.
Oh, fiddle,
It's up to my middle.
Oh, heck,
It's up to my neck.
Oh, dread,
It's upmmmmmmmmmmffffffffff . . .

or

Quote:
Rain by Shel Silverstein

I opened my eyes
And looked up at the rain,
And it dripped in my head
And flowed into my brain,
And all that I hear as I lie in my bed
Is the slishity-slosh of the rain in my head.

I step very softly,
I walk very slow,
I can't do a handstand--
I might overflow,
So pardon the wild crazy thing I just said--
I'm just not the same since there's rain in my head.

If this is not to your liking have you considered having your student compose their own short poems? Not necessarily as an individual assignment but as a group assignment (3-4 kids per group).

Could you give me the title of the youtube clips or would it be possible to post the links via Youtube Ireland or Youtube Japan. Our school net-nanny is blocking Youtube USA, Canada, UK, Australia, NZ, and Korea (this week - we'll see abou next).

Thanks.

Our net-nanny is blocking whatever that is, too. Is there a different way to link to it?

(On the same note, it seems that school net-nannies are more likely to block something with 'game' on the homepage - it might be better for sites like yours to use 'activity' or 'g-a-m-e'.

YBS,

Those are bothersome firewalls but nothing serious you can't work around. First, for youtube - just take the .kr out and you get a universal for the video link. Thus, http://youtube.com/watch?v=2GsYFk5zIik

All the links are at bottom the same. the .ca/.kr/.jp just refer to the language domain the video opens up in.

This is the best youtube search function. Just use ddeubel + Bukowski or Billy Collins to find the videos. I love this thing! http://www.yvoschaap.com/youtube/

I suggest though, getting a youtube downloader. Then download at home, send by mail and then use without the internet on your computer. Very easy. Here is a nice link to SAVE2PC but there are others. This is the professional. Just download , open/install and then put the crack into the program file to replace the original. You are set. http://eflclassroom.ning.com/resources/attachment/download?id=826870%3AUploadedFi58%3A53373

Hope this works out.
