I'm a PS teacher, if it makes a difference. I've heard (and read) stories of Chuseok gifts being exchanged.

If you're in a PS:

1. Have you received gifts from your school, P, VP, or co-teacher(s)?
2. Have you given gifts to any all or all of the above?
3. If you answered yes to 2, what did you buy and for whom?

Frankly, I don't know what to expect from my school, admin, or cts, but I'd rather not be in the rather awkward position of getting a bunch of gifts but having nothing to give in return, OR vice versa.

Thoughts?

usually gifts are only given to the parents and close relatives. while some schools may present small tokens of appreciation like duk, there is no reason to give a gift to your principal/vice principal. if you feel inclined, just bring in a cake or something for them to share on the day before the holiday and your teachers/administrators will appreciate the gesture.

I think I will bring in dduck for the teacher's office. Shows your understanding of Korean tradition and may get you some brownie points.

I will give my landlord something. His wife has been very nice to our son, and I have had a couple of rough patches with the husband, but he's a good guy.
I will also give my poetry mentor something. That's it though.

If you don't like spam you can always barter it for beer at the corner store.

As sad as it sounds, you can always make a mince patty with the spam. Mirepoix (1/8 inch cubes) of onion, a pinch of macerated garlic, a little salt, ground black pepper, pinch of oregano or thyme, some breads crumbs, an egg. Mix and make a little patty. Good with breakfast eggs. Fry till brown.
