Is the schedule posted online somewhere? Any intensives in February? I think that's why I'm on my break from classes.

CELTA is the only way to go.

Forget all these other courses which have copied from the CELTA format. CELTA was there first and will always be the best.

I have my CELTA, it encouraged me to go onwards to do my DELTA then my MEd.

CELTA is not the only way to go. It all depends on what you want to do after your time here in Korea. It also depends on what you plan to do in Korea. As others have said, if you are looking to just bump your salary then do the minimum required.

If you are going back to your home country to teach, then figure what you need when you get back.

In Canada, the CELTA is not enough to get certified by different TESOL governing bodies. It is not enough hours. I have my M'Ed but to get certified by TESOL Canada, I need to have a 220-250 hour TESOL course. CELTA doesn't come close to this. Every province is different, so you need to look into what paper you need if you want to continue to teach when you get back.

You may find your experience competes with the trainers ego...and in this case...be prepared to swallow your pride.

This is a theme I've seen mentioned time and time again by people who have taken the CELTA. I've read a lot of people say that the trainers have a real, "my way or the highway" attitude. That alone is a turn-off.

Patently untrue. The majority of people who've done the CELTA on this board do not complain about it. I haven't seen but 2 people who did the course complain about the CELTA on here. Elsewhere on the internet, I've seen a majority of CELTA takers say it was great for their teaching development.

So you know what bassexpander has and has not read/heard? Rolling Eyes

Look, there will always be CELTA fans and CELTA detractors. It's the nature of the beast. But really, if you're going to take issue with something, take issue with objective factshow in the world can you say that he hasn't seen what he says he's seen?

I just wanted to let you know that IGSE(www.igse.ac.kr) runs a intensive course in Feb 2009. I don't remember the exact starting date but the course one before ends on the 3rd of feb and the feb. course starts pretty much right away. 9am to 5:30 every day for 4 weeks. 2,150,000won.
British Council runs Celta too but it costs 300,000won more.

I was thinknig about taking it in Feb too so did some research but I haven't really made any decision yet. Good luck with ya!

If you get your CELTA and take a 120+ hour TEFL course you can exchange them for an MA in linguistic teachealogy. I think you have to apply early and it has to be done through a school in Greenland. Regardless, that is becoming the norm for teachers.

Your welcome for the helpful advice.

For what it's worth, I recently completed a CELTA course in the UK and cannot review it positively enough.
Whilst I wouldn't group myself with the so-called 'CELTA Worshippers', I reckon that it was incredibly useful for somebody with little teaching experience behind them. Inevitably parts of it won't be 100% transferrable to each and every EFL classroom you may come across, but the important thing is that the CELTA helps you to be adaptable and confident in planning and delivering lessons to a decent standard.
Obviously this is going to vary from centre to centre, but I found the course I took (through Action English in Leeds) to be well structured and excellently taught, and I was offered as much support as was required throughout. It was a tough month, but totally worth it!
(If anyone's considering taking the course and is curious about what it's like/what to expect/how hard you work/quite how bad you will look after a month of minimal sleep/etc, I attempted to vlog my way through it - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lU_B0DfbwLA)

Hey, were you taught by Claire and Sarah?
I took the course at the beginning of 2008 and was a part of the very first class that went through Action English. The teachers were great and I learnt a lot over the four weeks. Whilst the programme is demanding, those that dedicate their full attention to it are sure to succeed.
