|
|
Presented for your consideration ... mostly for amusement value.
From the Associated Press
Quote: |
Speaking to reporters Thursday, Rep. Lynn Westmoreland of Grantville, Ga., described the Obamas as members of an "elitist-class ... that thinks that they're uppity," according to The Hill, a Capitol Hill newspaper.
Asked to clarify whether he intended to use the word, he said, "Yeah, uppity."
In a statement Friday, Westmoreland who was born in 1950 and raised in the segregated South said he didn't know that "uppity" was commonly used as a derogatory term for blacks seeking equal treatment. Instead, he referred to the dictionary definition of the word as describing someone who is haughty, snobbish or has inflated self-esteem. |
Just to draw a finer point on things ...
Quote: |
Westmoreland is one of the most conservative members of Congress. He has drawn criticism from civil rights advocates on a number of issues, including last year when he led opposition to renewing the 1965 Voting Rights Act. He also was one of two House members last year who opposed giving the Justice Department more money to crack unsolved civil rights killings. |

I was gonna say who cares . . . but then I read:

I think its entirely possible that he did not even mean it in the racial connotation it would have if one reflected on it. Nobody in politics is going to stand by anything they say if it could possibly have a racially negative connotation. I mean it wasn't left-wingers who turned on Trent Lott, it was George W. Bush. But I don't feel sorry for the Congressman, either. Uppity? Jeez. [/quote] |

Okay, I'll put a finer point on it still, even though I put it in bold thge first time ...

He came of majority age in 1968. To have spent the next 40 years - in Georgia, mind you - living a political life and not knowing what he was about to say ... the mind boggles.
Or else he is a liar.
The last couple of months of a campaign are the moments when the direst of knives are removed from their sheaths. It's because the lies that get told just might not have time to be refuted in the minds of absolutely everyone before the polling places open in November.
What's most unfortunate for the GOP is that this lie happens to be true. Obama really IS a black man "seeking equal treatment." He even had the temerity to go to law school at one of the very top school in the country and graduate with Latin letters after his name.
Quite clearly, Mr Obama does not know his place. |

So let him save face. He cannot say it again.
Besides, its good for Obama when white, old, Southern Republicans say this kind of stuff. |

If Democrats think that they help their cause by focusing on every little linguistic issue they're wayy high. Makes them look petty, obsessive and silly. |

Um, "silly" is probably one of the words my pal Barack heard when he first went to leading members of the African American political base and told them what he had in mind.
"This country isn't ready for a black man in the White House," is what I've heard they told him.
I guess you could say it's still an open question whether that turns out to be true or not.
No democrat has yet "focused" on it. The story was labeled "28 minutes ago" when I posted it. |

Now 'silly' has racial undertones?
Why don't you just make a list of words white people can't say? Much easier. |

Um, no. It was the leaders of the black community that said it to him. I'm pretty sure he recounted it in his speech in Philadelphia a few months ago. Possibly they didn't use the word 'silly,' but were more polite about it.
I just checked, and I wrote what I intended to say. You decided to read something else. Science fiction has its time and place, and the imagination is a wonderful tool. You don't have to be one, though, not if you don't want to be. |

Haha. I read your posts with Stuart Smalley's voice in my head...

Big deal. Jesse Jackson called him an " igger". You would suppose that was far worse. |

This so called misspeaking is the oldest trick in the book. Here's an example provided for the cameras - Martin Luther Coon:

It's sad to think there are still people like that in the United States. The poll numbers are not reassuring. If McCain wins, it will be due to the racist vote. That means the Republican Party will have a mandate to continue racism. Think about it.
I hope the American people are better than this. |

I am thinking about it. And here is what I think: B. Obama's supporters and their tactics sicken me. |

What tactics are you referring to in the present case? |
