Chris Murray Combo
Number 1 Korean
I&I Djangdan
Skasucks
Saturday, Sept 20
Club DGBD, Hongdae
doors 7:30
show 8:00
20 000w
Chris Murray shares the stage with several Hongdae acts. If you haven't heard of I&I Djangdan yet, they're a killer dub reggae band featuring DJ Seafran from France and Jang Goon on vocals. I saw them last Saturday and my feet still haven't stopped moving.
Unfamiliar with the Chris Murray Combo? Chris Murray got his start in the Canadian third-wave ska band King Apparatus, then moved to California and started performing solo, just himself and an acoustic guitar. He mastered lo-fi recording, releasing albums done on 4-track and even on a walkman. Now he fronts a three-piece combo which has established itself at the forefront of ska worldwide. Recently he released a collaboration album with the Slackers.
Here's a musical sample to get you excited.

It's nice to know there are still Ska bands. I saw Madness in high school at UCLA and that was like a million years ago. |

The first thing I heard from Chris Murray was his "4 Track Adventures" album and it kind of turned me off to his music. (That, and his collaborations (?) with Stubborn Records artists. I was a bigger fan of the rocksteady-themed stuff coming out from Simmerdown Records and Steady Beat) Still, a show like this doesn't come to Korea everyday so I may have to head down to Hongdae.
Thanks for the head's up, RACETRAITOR |

I have to agree that Chris Murray is more of a ska musician for ska people. If you didn't like that album, steer clear of Raw; he recorded that one on a walkman.
But if you are into the reggae and ska, the opening bands are worth seeing as well. Kingston Rudieska is getting pretty big these days. I just discovered I&I Djangdan, a fantastic Korean dub reggae band, so they'll put on a great performance as well. |

Plus the Friday show will be a good chance to celebrate Talk Like a Pirate Day. |

yeah, Chris Murray is awesome live! I'm in the States and I haven't seen him in a while. He usually only plays on the West Coast these days...man I wish I was in Korea.
Oh well, see ya in '09 |

Well, they're arriving in Korea tomorrow night. Now I have to figure out what a ska band who's just finished a large tour of Japan likes to do in their off time. |

This country is in for one hell of a ska injection. If you go to Hongdae Playground Thursday evening you might see a brief musical appearance by the combo.

Those show times are too damn early. I don't finish teaching near Jamsil until 11pm. Two weeks ago in Hongdae I saw Buga Kingz at 1:30am. That's more like it. Have fun, ska is great, I'm jealous.
EDIT: Here is a video of Kingston Rudieska singing "Jindo skarirang" (feat.jang-goon)

I've always liked this one. |

Jang Goon will be playing on the Saturday show.
We hung out in the park tonight and the boys managed to play a bunch of songs on the fly.
I'll try to stretch out the show times but you know Korea--shows have to end before the subways do. Saturday we're all going to go to this crazy new reggae bar that we discovered tonight in Hongdae. |
