On another thread somebody stated that there is a difference between Great Britain and the United Kingdom. I understand that England is often confused with United Kingdom, but what's the difference between the former pair?

Asking 'cause I'd like to know.

I don't know the official answer but my understanding is that it's 'the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland'.

Great Britain, or Britain, generally referes to England, Scotland and Wales and the UK is those three plus Northern Ireland.

Most people I encounter who are not familiar with the UK think that the word 'England' covers it all. Very upsetting when you're not English!

We're only British during the Olympics. At all other times, we tend to assume our respective nationalities.

Personally speaking, I'm English first, European second and British third.

And very stupid, because many people mistake British for "English" and get offended. Bout' time some clouds got lifted on that island.

^You're forgetting the Scottish Parliament and the Welsh Assembly.

Personally, I'd welcome Scottish and Welsh independence if that's what the majority want. To quote Kevin Myers:

There lies the ruin of Scotland - subsidies. Guaranteed transfers of capital from England have created a political culture of sloth which is now endemic and even personalised. Scottish people are the most obese in Europe, in which regard they resemble the wretched Scottish statelet. Only a minority of Scottish people work for a living - and most of those who have jobs are employed by the state: 577,300. In other words, they are employed by the English to manage themselves. The rest of the Scots are on the dole or pensions, living in state-owned housing estates, sending their children to state-run schools, where the most likely form of personal enterprise they will ever encounter is their local heroin-dealer.

Kevin Myers is a tool.

Minority of people in Scotland employed.... so there's 51% unemployment?

Independence for Wales and Scotland would be good, however, power will always be moving away from individual countries anyway (i.e towards the EU etc...)

If English football fans cause trouble anywhere, the media says they're British.

If Glasgow Rangers, sorry Scottish, fans cause trouble anywhere, the media says they're Scottish and not British.

ps- I've hardly heard the term GB since coming to Korea.
I'm British don't you know, don't you know.

Record numbers of people are in work in Scotland and the unemployment rate is at an all-time low, according to the latest figures.
Data released by the Office for National Statistics shows an employment rate of almost 77%.

That is higher than the rest of the UK and almost all other countries within the EU.

From BBC News, 17th July 2007 - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/6904580.stm

Um yeah, so there!

Oh aye, and to answer the OP's question - it's just as someone else said. Great Britain is England, Scotland and Wales. The United Kingdom includes Northern Ireland.

Just check out a UK passport - says on the front "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland".

Great Britain is the island composed of England, Wales and Scotland.
The UK is the above plus Northern Ireland.
