Vin Scully, the Dodgers announcer. If you haven't heard him call a game you haven't heard it done right.

The reason I post this is that it was just announced he was coming back for his 60th season next year.

Yeah, that's right. 60 seasons he's been announding the Dodgers. That's insane. Listen to a broadcast. He's still clear, cogent, poetic at times.

We love you Vin.

A living legend, and the last MLB announcer to even pretend to be non-partisan during games. The rise of homerism is pretty dispiriting, actually, and Vin is the last of a dying breed.

Another thing about watching Vin call Dodger games here in Korea. It brings you back home. Vin Scully is L.A. If I'm stressed, homesick or whatever, that all evaporates when I hear him.

I loved his call on Manny's first home run with the Dodgers. "That's just Manny being Manny!"

whats funny is i was watching a dodger game in bangkok and vin was calling the game solo and my wife says "man that guy is boring" i almost killed her, i said, THATS VIN SCULLY, A LIVING LEGEND, hes been doing games since they were in Brooklyn!!!!!!!!!! she was like "oh really..."

there are a number of local announcers who are superb Vin, I grew up with Marty Brennaman doing Reds games (I'm so old I remember when he replaced Al Michaels), of course Harry Carry in Chicago was incredible "hey arnie, would you look at that, he's kissing her on the strikes and shes kissing him on the balls", my sister has some stories about Harry going to his bar between the 3rd and 7th innings instead of going to radio, wonder how many times he was sloshed in the booth Jack Buck in St. Louis of course, Milo Hamilton has been everywhere. Bob Uecker in Milwaukee. you got to remember in the day many teams had their games on 50,000 watt am radio stations, at night you could get anything, especially if you were east of the rockies

On American networks...Dick Enberg smooth, Pat Summeral (when sober), NOBODY could call a college football game like Keith Jackson. I do miss Howard Cossell. those of you of a certain age would remember howard doing the halftime highlights on mnf, that was the only way you saw other games. Also him and Dandy Don, what a team

I grew up in the Los Angeles media market and was privileged to be able to listen to the soothing voice of Vin Scully growing up.

My second nomination for this title would be a tie with Chick Hearn. This is a man who coined so many phrases used in basketball such as 'slam dunk', 'finger roll', and 'charity stripe'. Much like his baseball counterpart in Los Angeles, Chick had a broadcasting streak of 3,338 games. He was the man.

I love Chick and Vin, two legends. Nobody can touch these guys.

I feel compelled to add probably not the best ever, but certainly one of the best american football anouncers: Wayne Larivee. His play by play makes the game twice as exciting.

if you ever get to listen to a Dallas Cowboy game on the radio, Brad Sham is one of the best football announcers out there. he sometimes gets to do a national game on radio

There have been a lot of great announcers, some specializing in one sport - like Vin Scully - and some who've covered multiple sports like Curt Gowdy, Al Michaels, and Jim McKay.

Scully certainly outlasted all the other great baseball announcers - like Mel Allen - and he's made many memorable calls and has received many honors, including a Lifetime Achievement Emmy Award in 1995 and being named "Broadcaster of the Century" by the American Sportscasters Association in 2000.

Because he's been so good for so long he definitely figures to be at or near the top of everyone's list of best sports announcers - save those who don't follow baseball.

Here're my favorites in various sports - Don Dunphy for boxing, Marv Alpert (and the impartial Johnny Most) for basketball, Al Michaels for football - and the team of Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby "the Brain" Heenan for pro wrestling...

Two baseball announcers that I feel are worthy of mention are Dizzy Dean and Pee Wee Reese. I have good memories of listening to them announce ballgames when I was a youngster.
