The Olympics should only have one combative sport... Ultimate fighting. Winner takes all. Who cares if you can score some points against a guy. it means nothing, knock him out, make him submit...that is real fighting and pure fighting. |

Perhaps a point system is a more...um...non-disabling way of seeing who's better. Perhaps there's a little sportsmanship involved. You know, without actually kicking the shit out of your opponent.
Wrestling - Two guys trying to submit each other. Sounds like what you're talking about, actually.
Judo - Intricate and precise, to my eye. Submission, again, seems to be the point.
TKD - We've covered that, I think, in another post.
Boxing - Here's one where you try to beat your opponent's ass. Knock him out, right? Isn't that the point? Again, sounds like your style of fighting.
Isn't the endgame the same in all types of martial arts, generally? Some look to submission as a standard for deciding the victor while other styles espouse "self-defense only" as their mantra. Isn't the point, though, to win?

Beast, you must realize that I'm speaking from the perspective of one who's not had much experience with martial arts, aside from stardard Army hand-to-hand stuff, which doesn't amount to shit, really, as we all know. I have the highest respect for all of you with the discipline to practice any style of the arts. I just post here to learn, frankly. |

I'm really hoping either taekwondo gets its act together (which it probably won't) or gets removed as an Olympic sport after the London Olympics. It's a useless martial arts for self-defense and the sport still sucks with weird scoring rules, dropping of the hands during sparring, lots of feet shuffling and a host of other useless crap.
Kim Un-yong was instrumental in getting taekwondo into the Olympics, but since his corrupt butt is now out of the IOC, the sport's chances of staying have taken a considerable hit.
Judo should stay and perhaps point karate or wushu should be given a probationary chance as demonstration sports. |

Well...
I think the whole idea of olympic tae kwon do, amateur boxing and wrestling is that they're SPORTS first, and fighting forms second.
Just like fencing. I mean, what's the point (lol)? A bullet in the head would stop Nam Hyunhee dead in her tracks.
The Olympic sports attempt to have athletes compete against each other under the same rules, with the same equipment. It's a test of their training, their heart, and their discipline.
Now, regarding the title of this thread:

"useless"?!
Them's fightin' words!
Just kidding, beast. But seriously, boxing's kept me in shape, put me on TV many times (fights and interviews) and paid some bills. And even as an amateur, I never lost a street fight. You'd be suprised how the patty-cake, patty-cake look of Olympic boxing changes in the street. Have you ever seen a guy's cheekbone before? Disgusting.
I agree, though, that MMA should be in the Olympics too. |

Just wanted to chip in that no-holds-barred fighting was in the Olympics way back in 648 BC. I think the only thing stopping it from a return to the Olympics is its thuggish reputation, which is thankfully starting to be shed.

A number of MMA pros have a background in free-style wrestling.
Look at it this way: Would I be afraid to get in a fight with a 130-pound guy with no experience in martial arts? Apart from the fact that I think bar / street fighting's for idiots, no. What if he were an Olympic wrestler? Yes, I'd be afraid. A boxer? I'd sure want to take it to the ground asap. A Judo artist? I'd expect to be taken to the ground asap. A Taekwondo artist? No, I'd be about as afraid as I would be of the first guy. |

Depends on how good the 130 pounder is. Most TKD guys, maybe even most black belts probably wouldn't be that much danger, but if you have someone who really knows what they're doing and plenty of room to work with...
You wouldn't be able to get close to them without getting your teeth moved to the back of your mouth. |

I think the whole reason that TKD was choosen as an olympic sport is because it is more "tame".
For example, if one country representative accidently killed another in a match it would cause international uproar. At least with TKD you really don't have to worry about opponents maiming each other or getting too heated and really start trying to kill each other.
Could you imagine no holds bar fighting?
It would be awsome... but they really don't want to have a "sport" that endores serious competiveness agianst other countries. It would cause too much international turmoil. |
