Hi All,
I apologize if this topic has been covered here before. I am an American and have been working in Korea for 4 years. I have been paying into the Korean pension system during that time. I've heard that I can collect that money before leaving. Does anyone know about this process? I'm in the early stages. I will be leaving in February 2009.
Thanks for any tips.
Best,
Scruggs

Contact either the national or your regional office to get directions to where you apply locally.

Have your exit ticket, ARC number, passport and the bank information where you want the money sent.

Go to the office, fill in the forms and be patient. On average it takes 4-8 weeks AFTER you leave Korea for the refund to appear in your bank back home.

There is a sticky in the jobs forum as well:

I seem to recall a post by someone who recieved their Pension contributions before leaving Korea, but I can't find it.

Thanks Ttompatz for the answer, but for me the question still lingers, 'Is it possible to visit the pension office, submit required paperwork, and possibly get refunded before leaving Korea?"

I figure the details about this may vary from pension office to pension office, it is likely that people will be given a somewhat different explanation by officials about receving money before leaving, and it might work for a few while the norm is to receive it after leaving Korea.

That being said, if anyone has received their pension contributions before leaving Korea, could you share the process? Maybe it would provide some insight on how to do this (or not).

Thanks.

It is more a case of when your boss submits the last pension contributions and how soon after you finish work that you are leaving.

If you are leaving on the last day of work = not likely to happen.
If you are leaving 30 days after you finish work = good chance.
If you are leaving 6 months after you finished work = no problem.

Thanks for the info. I usually plan to be in country (Korea) around 1 month after a contract (or contracts) finishes just to have time to deal with any situations that may arise. If my high school plays it straight, which they have been good thus far, then I will try to get the pension in the month after my contract expires before I leave Korea. It's worth a shot. Thanks again.
