I don't know how often this one has come up; hold their feet to the fire. Severance is not an option, it's the law. And if some employer attempts to weasel out of the deal, there are legal recourses.

Many universities (including the last one I was at) get around the severance thing by claiming that it's built in to the monthly salary, which is a dodge, of course, but whatcha gonna do, eh?

BERLITZ refuses to pay severance also. Berlitz claims that severance is calculated into the per lesson rate.

In the 1990's A group of instructors took them to the Labour Board on this issue and won. The Labour Board ordered Berlitz to start paying severance. The teachers were ecstatic!

But then the Korean Government didn't enforce the order. Berlitz continues to not pay severance to its instructors.

Teachers expected that because the Labor Board decided in their favour that Berlitz would comply.

A teacher dating a girl in the Berlitz accounting department at the time was told by the girl that some money was paid out so that this would go unenforced as well as to take the heat off of the illegal C-2 teachers they had hired.

Sounds like Yonsei University might be doing something similar with its instructors.

I took my old Uni to the labour board and got my 8 million no problems. It was actually that experience that led my wife to decide to work there.

since my name popped up, i feel qualified to post.

i liked yonsei and wonju well enough, and found that the teachers at the uni were close enough that we socialized well together, but not so tight that we were joined at the hip. i left to pursue my ma-tesl.

a) severance. i got it when i left after a year. i'm not sure about this new rule y'all are talking about.

b) shared housing. near yonsei wonju, there are two apartment complexes a 7 minute walk from the campus. very nice view of the lake and rice field, etc.
problem; there is very little else in the area for housing. so choices are studio singles, or two bedroom apartments. (or a 20 minute commute.) these apartments are quite roomy, and unless your roomie is a real nutjob (or you are) things should go well. i would have preferred my own place, but i also like a large apartment. and my roomie turned out to be excellent.

c) should a poster have the right to post any opinion and the reader be expected to evaluate it? perhaps if we were discussing philosophy or on a winter cycling discussion list...

but not here. if i tell you that winter in korea is cold, you can believe me or not. but how do you know what to base that belief on? if i come from tahiti, i'll have a different take on "cold" than someone from northern saskatchewan.
in order to fully evaluate a poster's recommendation or negative post, we need to know where they are coming from.

so if someone tells you that a particular school is horrid, whether or not they were fired, and in what circumstances, makes a huge difference in how one could interpret their information.

likewise, if they tell you a school is great, you may want to find out if they get a "finder's fee."

You have too much time on your hands- well then do some charity work.

That is like "If I had anymore money all I would do is spend it".

No one forget that Yonsei Seoul is much better than Yonsei Wonju.

half the hours and 4 months of vacation for the same money. Yonsei is the richest Universtiy in Korea. WonJu is paying less because some Korean manager at the WonJu school wants to earn points with the Yonsei administration by showing how he could get the foreigners to work for less.

If you have good qualifications - don't bother with that school.

By the way after a 10 month contract the first year -Yonsei Seoul pays severence
