I normally don't do this, but I couldn't let this one pass.
Just saw this ad on the Korean Job Board: "Pretty Good Teacher Needed For Pretty Good Hagwon."
Some highlights:
Quote: |
The work and pay packages at this school are very similar to what is offered by other schools. |
Let's just see about that:
Quote: |
2.0 mil pay each month, usual holiday package plus one-ish variable day off each month during level testing. Housing allowance of W300,000 each month, no key money. No housing is offered. |
So, what we're essentially looking at is 2.3/month with no housing and no key money. The guy tries to gloss over this:
Quote: |
If you take the job, you'll stay at a near by goshiwon (new) for 2 months until you have key money and then you'll find your own place. |
VERY optimistic. At this pay rate, you'd have to save like mad to come up with even 3 million won in 2 months, and even that's pitifully low as far as key money is concerned. Moving on:
Quote: |
Experienced teachers in Korea know that keeping the school and housing separate is key to piece of mind. |
Experienced teachers in Korea also know that this is an incredibly lowball offer.
Now, let's see how much the "pretty good teacher" will be working for 2.3 a month with no housing and no key money:
Quote: |
You'll teach and work 30 hours a week. |
Quote: |
Work hours are from 11 AM to 6 PM ish. |
Sounds more like 35+ hours a week to me. Even if we accept the 30 hours/week figure for the sake of argument, that works out to less than 20,000 won per hourwith NO housing and NO key money. Can you live on that in a country with notoriously high rents even outside of Seoul?
Quote: |
Permission for part time work is readily given. |
And you'll probably need it if you accept these terms.
Quote: |
Commuting daily from Seoul is a possibility. |
Maybe if you sleep in the subway station. Seoul rent on 2.3 million a month with no key money offered? Laughable.
Quote: |
You'll teach English, math and science. |
Illegal on an E-2 visa, but that's just gravy when it comes to this offer.
The guy who posted this isn't even a wonjang or recruitersays he's the current FT looking for his own replacement. He ought to be ashamed of himself. |

Outside of Seoul you can get pretty nice housing for 400,000 won per month and a 10,000,000 won deposit. Apparently this job is 30 min or so outside since you can commute FROM Seoul. This might appeal to someone living with a spouse in Seoul.
Teaching math, science, or whatever is NOT illegal on an E-2 if you do it in English and it is part of a program to learn English.
Since cash paid as a "housing allowance" is taxable (while employer provided housing is tax free) the monthly pay for this job is at least 400,000 won too low. |

Unlikely. An F2 can make 2.3 on less than 20 hours a week. |

I make 2.8 on less than 20 hours a week. I saw that add and was horrified. |

This is close to the rate that ASKNOW found me (after they claimed to negotiate on my behalf) except that the korean hakwon failed to pay all of the salary and failed to pay airfare. The ad does not say whether the hakwon pays airfare.

That sounds a lot like ASKNOW, have u checked the recruiter on this? They misinform teachers that it is to their advantage to work illegally and many teachers believe this Korean myth. In reality, it is a good deal for the hakwon but a very bad deal for the teacher.
