One friend told me I should sit in a cafe with my laptop and sign that reads, "Foreign English Teacher".

If you are white and do not dress like a businessman or a soldier, a "Foreign English Teacher" sign is completely needless.

Stand on the street and look friendly for five minutes or less. I was beating privates off with a stick (HAW HAW HAW) before I learned to not do this.

Finding private students is EASY. Getting them to pay you what you want is the hard part.

You won't be making any money doing privates, and neither will yingwenlasohi.

Privates are illegal.

You are welcome.

It's all luck. I got a gig that was 2 hours per day, Mon-fri for 70,000 (they offered that so I just accepted). Nicest family ever - they cooked for me a lot too. Beautiful apartment - beef galbi for dinner often. Did that for 14 months. It's challenging to prepare for, obviously, but so worth it because it meant I could leave Korea far earlier than I anticipated.

Prior to meeting this family, the privates I did were annoying - cancelations etc.

What is the penalty for getting caught doing privates? Deportation and fine? If you were facing deportation, would you be legally obliged to refund employer recruitment money, flight over etc.? Could you pay the fine...and do a midnight run?

Theoretically speaking.

Who in the world is yingwenlasohi?

Actually you can make good money doing privates.
I'm sure me and yingwenlasohi will do just fine.
I never thanked you.

I was not beating privates off with a stick and I live in Seocho. I went to worknplay website.

If you get corporate gigs they always pay even if there is a cancellation and it is really easy b/c you just shoot the breeze with most of them. And if you do corporate gigs and tutor a CEO there are good benefits. I have only been doing this for 3 weeks and I already have been invited for golf and asked if the chauffeured car should take me home (b/c I had said to him how I got lost coming here). The best part he goes away on business alot but you still get paid!!!

I was worried to about privates but that is mostly when doing privates with little kids. If you go to a company its more legit and they are not going to turn you in. A mom could get mad you didn't tutor her kid like you wanted or missed many apts and will turn you in. A corporation won't do that. All the people I heard who got caught is b/c of crazy k-girl or crazy mom.
