Palin sounded, at times, like she was speaking a foreign language as she gave voice to the beautifully crafted words that had been prepared for her on Wednesday night.
But that wasnt held against her. Thanks to the level of general esteem that greeted her ascent to the podium, it seems weve all got to celebrate the fact that Americas Hottest Governor (Princess of the Fur Rendezvous 1983, Miss Wasilla 1984) could speak at all
Could there be a more thoroughgoing humiliation for Americas women?
You are not, I think, supposed now to say this. Just as, I am sure, you are certainly not supposed to feel that having Sarah Palin put forth as the Republicans first female vice presidential candidate is just about as respectful a gesture toward women as was John McCains suggestion, last month, that his wife participate in a topless beauty contest.
|
If McCain thought he could pull the Hillary supporters, sure looks like he was wrong on that one ... |

How about a supposedly strong woman being publicly cheated on by her husband with a taste for soft underlings and basically doing nothing about it? |

Yeah, that's probably worse. |

Sure. The most powerful woman could get the job because of her husband - and have absolutely no chance of getting the job without him.
Democrats/Liberals/lefties are making a huge mistake in playing the culture wars on this, imo. America, as Joo says, is a conservative nation. Stick to policy differences and "change" from Bush. If you try and play on their terms you will lose. |

Palin will blow over in a week or two. She has no substance, and that will be exposed. All she cares and knows about are fetuses and drilling for oil.
Meanwhile, McCain will keep on being McCain.
The polls are close, but they don't count unregistered voters, and come the election, there will be a ton of young people voting to prevent their country from 4 more years of destruction at the hands of the filthy rich.
I predict an Obama/Biden landslide come November.
It's the economy, stupid. |

I heard she can field dress a moose.
The question is: are these skills useful in Washington?

I think it's a strategic error for the Democrats to even talk about Palin. She's only the VeeP nominee. No one talks about Biden, and that's as it should be. Focus on the two presidential candidates and the mess the country's in. Keep it off secondary personalities as much as possible. |

Good point, but impossible. Can't resist the chance to hear Sarah Melrose, wife of Barry, talk about foreign affairs. It'll be like hearing an aunt or mom who reads People and watches E News Now! religiously, all of a sudden take an interest in world politics. Also, to have my aunt or mom debate one of the foremost experts on American foreign policy, will be, hilarious. |

McCain only needs to get a small percentage of the Hillary supporters to change the outcome of this election. He doesn't need all of them or even a majority of them. |

More from the article, and maybe I should have quoted this part at the top:
Quote: |
Because the Republicans, very clearly, believe that real people are idiots. This disdain for their smarts shows up in the whole way theyve cast this race now, turning a contest over economic and foreign policy into a culture war of the Real vs. the Elites. Its a smoke and mirrors game aimed at diverting attention from the fact that the partys tax policies have helped create an elite thats more distant from the people than ever before. And from the fact that the partys dogged allegiance to up-by-your-bootstraps individualism an individualism exemplified by Palin, the frontierswoman who somehow has managed to balance five children and her political career with no need for support is leading to a culture-wide crack-up. [...]
One of the worst poisons of the American political climate right now, the thing that time and again in recent years has led us to disaster, is the need people feel for leaders they can relate to. This need isnt limited to women; it brought us after all, two terms of George W. Bush. And it isnt new; Americans have always needed to feel that their leaders were, on some level, people like them.
|
It's been on my mind since the whole "elitist" canard got thrown out in Obama's face by Hillary. Do I really want a president who can bowl as well as I can? Don't I really need leaders who went to better schools than most of us did, and who've already displayed themselves more capable at the job than I would be or most people you might pull in off the street?
In a sense, isn't the whole "elitist" meme just another way to embrace, and even glorify ... mediocrity? |

Yeah Palin isn't pulling any women in at all. What's that I heard yesterday. Oh yeah, Mccain is now ahead of Obama in the polls.
Stick your heads in the sand more. |

I hope to God you're right, but let's face facts. Most young people don't give a crap enough to vote. |

What makes OBama such an expert on the economy.
Here is what is going to happen when you put Obama and Biden in office.
1. More social programs -> higher taxes
2. High taxes mean less money for the tax payer
3. Less money for the tax payer means they have to tighten their belts, and won't go out and buy that new washer/dryer, or go out to eat at that new trendy restaurant.
4. The economy slows down because people are hoarding their cash.
Thank you Democrats for sinking the economy into a bigger whole.
BTW, taxes for the rich is the biggest falacy the Democrats ever created. YOUR definition of rich is FAAAAAAR from the Democrat's definition of Rich.
Hmm..... You are single and you make over $50,000 / year. Congratulations! You are Rich! Welcome to the increased tax bracket. |
