What, exactly, is the difference between Indie & Alternative. I like several bands/singers that aren't mainstream but dunno which to categorise them in.

Indie is Alternative music that is not mainstream so I would categorize those musicians you listen to as Indie.

alternative music is not mainstream. that is why they came up with the genre tag. seeking out more stimulating forms rather than passively sucking down whatever is sold to you.

guitars+corporate label and radio play = rock. simple formula.

Alternative is a mainstream category to capture all the would-be indies. You've been had.

I guess it depends on how you define mainstream. To me, alternative music is mainstream because they play it on the radio and it draws a lot of revenue. They've had "alternative" music categories on music awards shows for quite some time now so to me, it's very popular. The kind of music that isn't mainstream is underground because few people in the population know about it and it doesn't generate great sales.

Classical isn't even on the ballot?
I'll write in the third vote for classical.

I like electronic too. Particularly dance punk. Blips and beeps with a beat.

And I love me some 80s Underground... New Wave!

the term "alternative" was created to describe music that is challenging to the listener. it's not a genre of shitcrap that is played on the radio.

i'm very curious to see what you call "alternative". most of the vapid crapped that people lump into that toilet is just "rock". often it's just "cock rock".

I remember when "alternative" music was the Pixies, Sebadoh, Throwing Muses kinda garbage. They called it college rock. I called it shit. I still listen to mostly punk rock like the Queers, Jizz Kids, Hard-On's, GG Allin, Adicts...blah, blah, blah. I am however a closet shoegazer fan. Slowdive, Air Formation, Mogwai, Readymade. But don't tell anyone. I also hate any music that preaches to you. I can watch the news to tell me how bad the government is I don't need to hear it in your crappy song. I'm talking to you Bad Religion, Pennnywise, Anti-Fag, NoFX.
