My public school is giving teachers a couple of extra days off over the Chuseok holiday - the Friday before and the Tuesday after. This is probably the case in a lot of schools. However, that time is not exactly supposed to be mine to spend as I see fit. I have to write a one page "education-related" report about what I'll be doing over my two extra days off to better myself as a teacher, and submit it to the administration.

I don't kick up a fuss over stuff like this, and no teachers in my school that I've talked to actually feel it's something they have to follow through on, but we all have to submit the paperwork nevertheless. This only started when we got a new vice-principal, so I guess it's related to his arrival. How about other public school teachers - do you have to jump through this hoop as well?

Not such a big deal. It sounds like you've got a new Chan haksa(Supervisor) in the Kyo Yuk Cheong(Office of Education) He's really not familiar with the job so he's decided to do everything by the book.

It might actually be your VP or Principal initiating this thing. Write one page. It shouldn't be that hard. I doubt they'll read it.

As far as I know we don't have to do anything like that...nor did we last year.

Who will be reading your "report?" How good is their English? If it were me, since most of my coworkers (and definitely the Principal and VP) have nonexistent levels of English, I'd find an education blog and copy and paste.

Ive heard of various schools doing this. Its either your VP or Principal whose making everyone do it. And all the K teachers will have to do it aswell. Its not just a thing for you.

Keep in mind, they have given you 2 extra days off rather than making you go to school and sit at a desk for 8 horus doing nothing. So its there way of saying we still own you even though were giving you more time off and dont forget it!

Just write it, i think actually if u look around on either here or the net there are people who have written some already that people can use to save time. Its all just BS anyway.

I'm at a new school this year. I've been asked to submit these as well.. So many documents. My ct says our vp likes paperwork....

I just typed up some bs in less than 10 minutes.

Everytime we have a bonus "school holiday" I have to write a report. It can be on pretty much anything. Learning about Korean culture is fine for me.

Yes, it's a bit of a hassle but 10-30mins 'work' in exchange for 3 days off is a fair trade in my book, so I wont kick up a fuss.

For this Chuseok I'm heading to Gyeongju, so Ill be giving my co-teacher a page or two on that when I return.

Korean teachers have 2 options for days like these -- write a self-study report or lose those days from vacation (actually, their "extra" vacation days allotted for family rituals which few actually use up.)

Some schools follow the letter of the rules & ask us foreigners to either do the report or forfeit vacation days, & some do not.

I really dont think it should cost you more than 5 minutes to do a report though. It wont be scrutinized. Surfing the net for lesson plan ideas, visiting a tourist site for cultural enrichment, etc, any bullshit should suffice.

My school didn't give the extra holidays. If they had though. they would not ask for such nonsense. I was told I had to submit one months curriculum in advance. Not to the school, but the Board of Education. So I will type out the topics of each lesson I plan on doing and throw in "middle school text review" every third lesson.
