OK, I just had a quick look at it online here:
http://www.behringer.com/FCA202/index.cfm
(Correct me if I'm wrong fellows but) it looks like that interface doesn't have a mic preamp, only line-level inputs. That's a problem, because all of the mics listed in this thread, including the SM57, require a preamp.
You absolutely need to buy a preamp in addition to a mic. (The only way around this is if you get some kind of mic that gives a line-level output signal, like maybe the kind of mic that plugs into a camcorder or something.) |

| Thanks for all the help. Like I said, Im a total noob when it comes to microphones. What kind of price would I be looking for a preamp? Could I potentially buy say for instance a shure combo with a pre and mic bundled together? So mic into preamp, then into interface, then into computer? Cheers. |

Basically, yes. But that may not be the best way forward for you.
The problem is that most standalone microphone preamps tend to be on the expensive side, because they're marketed to folks looking for something better than what's included in their interface or mixer.
Many (most, even?) interfaces have preamps built in. Two I would suggest you have a look at are the Line6 TonePort and the Tascam US-122 USB, both for sale in Korea online at http://www.mnshome.com/. Yes that means replacing your existing interface. Sorry.
If you're dead set on keeping, and using, your existing interface, there are a few cheap standalone mic preamps. Two I would consider if I were in your shoes would be the M-Audio Buddy (http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/AudioBuddy.html) and the Art Tube MP (http://www.artproaudio.com/products.asp?type=79&cat=1&id=1). I had a slightly more feature-laden version of the latter (http://www.artproaudio.com/products.asp?type=79&cat=1&id=58) which I bought off ebay and then sold on this forum when I moved on to something better. You might find either on ebay for less than $50 and import it duty free ('cos it's less than $100 ).
(The cool thing about either of these options is that you'll also get an instrument DI in the bargain, which allows you to plug an electric guitar or bass directly into the preamp and record the signal directly into your computer, which you can then dress up with digital distortion that simulates a guitar amp, such as these free, legit plugins --> http://www.simulanalog.org/. I know a guitar will physically plug into the 1/4" jacks on your current interface, but the electronics are different and the sound will be horribly lacking. OK, you haven't mentioned electric guitar, but it's worth thinking ahead. )
I'm not sure about mics and preamps bundled and sold together. You might find something like that, but I'm not sure.
There's a third option: the newly hatched beast known as the USB condenser mic. Never tried one but it's basically a mic that plugs straight into your PC via USB! You won't need your interface at all! The downside is you lose the instrument input. One of the cheaper ones is the Samson C01U USB (http://www.samsontech.com/products/productpage.cfm?prodID=1810), available for less than $100 on ebay but which you might find at Nagwon.
Well, that oughta give you something to think about... |
