Picture this:

Tall, super white, Newbie playing in the park with his 15 month old daughter (mixed). About ten, 60-70 year old ajummas getting all excited and saying amonst themselves, in Korean, things like:

"Ahhh, so pretty"
"Is she a foreigner?"
"No, no. Must be Korean"
"Who's he?"
"Why does she have curly hair? Is it a perm?"
"Yes, perm-uh, perm-uh"
"Wow, big eyes, big eyes. So lucky"
"Who's her mother? Where's her mother?"
"Why is he with the little girl?" (and she looks EXACTLY like me )
"Shh, shhh," (Newbie smiles to himself)

Then, in walks this super tall (and hot) Russian woman with her youngin (also mixed). She starts speaking to me in Korean and we have about a 10 minute conversation. The ajummas continue (after picking their jaws off the floor):

"WHAT THE???"
"Are they speaking Korean?"
"No, no, no... English"
"Is that her mother, what's going on?"
"No, no, no. The kids are the same age"
"Brother, brother!"
"No. No. Friend, friends"
"Wait, wait, they're talking again? Is that Korean?"
"No, No. Foreigner"
"Why are they speaking Korean?"
"Huh. Wow. That is Korean"
"Waaaaaaa. He knows Korean. hahahahaha. I'm so embarrassed."

Needless to say, the hot Russian mommy and this hot Canadian daddy were quite amused.

Being with my kid in public is always a laugh...Korean just don't know what to think. Anytime I am in bad mood we head out so I can laugh at the foolishness that occurs when I am with my daughter. My daughter is now at the age where she is starting to find the stupidness annoying, but I am trying to teach her to just enjoy the locals and they way the act. I think she prefers being with her mother in public so just gets a little more normal.

This thread reminds me of what happened to me in '96. I was invited to Everland by a Korean man and his Korean-American wife. They had two young children and one of the children grabbed my hand as we were walking. The Koreans who saw the Korean child holding the waegook's hand kept tripping over themselves. It was hilarious!

same here. I walked down the road to my local mart, which is run by an elderly couple. Their grandson was visiting them, and I went to go and say hello, and ended up holding the wee baby. This extraordinary vision: white female holding a Korean baby, caused many passersby to go all bug-eyed and nearly trip over. pretty funny for me too!

i love how they assume that the child is "korean" first and can't fathom the idea that the father is actually just that!!

just be careful that your wife doesn't get jealous of your 'hot' russian friend!!!!

It's always great when they find out you know some language after they said things they would not have said had they known. A few times when people found out I could understand a lot of they were saying they said, "Well, I better be careful now." Amusing. When they figure you do not understand they think it's OK to say anything, nasty or otherwise. Happens all over the world I guess. Can't say I'm entirely innocent of doing the same thing occasionally.
