Soldiers warned about prostitution crackdown near Yongsan Garrison

SEOUL South Korean police are planning a major prostitution crackdown in areas near the U.S. Armys Yongsan Garrison.

Yongsan police confirmed Tuesday they had received instructions from the Central Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency to conduct crackdowns in the "glass house" area near Yongsan Station and on Itaewons infamous Hooker Hill.

A Yongsan police spokesman said Tuesday they should start raiding brothels shortly after the Chuseok holidays this weekend.

"We expect efforts to clear up the prostitution this time will be a lot tougher and stronger than ever before," the spokesman said.

"The Central Police Agency is determined to root out the prostitution."

The spokesman said U.S. troops should avoid the areas to keep from getting caught up in the upcoming raids.

U.S. Forces Korea spokesman Dave Palmer said the command has received no official warning of the planned crackdowns.

"We obviously support any initiatives [the police] come up with," Palmer said. "Were happy theyre taking action."

Police said riot squads, normally used to put down illegal protests, will take up the work of closing down brothels and illegal gambling operations as the summer protest season winds down.

Brothel owners have already struck back after a series of raids in the Dongdaemun area put many out of business. On Monday, some owners released a list of police officers they claim have taken bribes, and threatened to release more names if the crackdowns continue.

Police said Tuesday that they welcome the list as an opportunity to weed out corruption.

Best thing about these "stings" is that they're nothing more than land grabs.

Well that's going to be quite the surprising raid isn't it? They are really going to fight alot of crime very soon, no doubt about it.

What an enlightened police fight we have protecting us here...those fascists back home never bother to inform the criminals of a raid before the raid. It's kind of unfair really. Here in this country, the cops are polite enough to RSVP in advance. Very enlightened of them.

I just walked up the famous hill 10 minutes earlier on the way home from work, and I can say that there were 2 places open with a fat chick in the doorway beckoning (it's still too early for the skinnier chicks to start working). But I DID notice that there were a lot of buildings that looked shut down, with doors closed and sealed and no evidence of anyone inside. I walk up the hill every day and never noticed every thing so shut down before. I assumed it was for Chuseok until I read this post. My new theory is this: Is it possible that the prostitutes, pimps, and brothel owners -- in a completely unpredictable move -- may have closed up shop in order to not be thrown in prison? If they are truly devious...they may even wait ONE ENTIRE WEEK until until AFTER the raids to open again.

Police vs Criminals: South Korean style. It's not exactly The Wire, is it?

Not totally relevant, as I'm too tired to make the connection explicit, but: I live in a non-seoul city of about a million, and we have streetwalkers here. No kidding. Weird, huh? I'd never really seen that in Korea before.

How thoughtful. I think people here have been most unfair to police in Korea. These are truly the most considerate police I've ever heard of, short of the Pirates of Penzance.

Are the crooks equally considerate? Do, say, the bank robbers make appointments with the bank before the heist?

Knock, knock.

Who's there?

The police.

Oh, we were expecting you. Come on in and have a cup of tea.

Of course, it is always possible there is some fiendishly clever logic behind this announcement.

Like, that all the brothels close up shop for the week, and then the police don't have to do all that vexing paperwork. And, the brothel owners don't release the names of the police that took their bribes.

Exactly.

It's kind of a face saving exercise by the police, no? We are not going to back down, we are still going to raid you, but we are going to tell you in advance. Everyone's a winner.

I'm worried about how I will spend it. Guess I'll have to donate my monthly rub'n'tug fee to the local orphanage.

Good idea! A rub and tug from an orphan is better - what they lack in technique they make up for in enthusiasm.

Is it just my imagination, or does Korea have remarkably gullible reporters who don't know how to ask questions?

But sometimes the reporter does have a strange, but subtle, sense of humor, or so I assume.

I imagine the reporter chuckling to himself as he writes this cosmically absurd line:

Quote:
Police said riot squads, normally used to put down illegal protests, will take up the work of closing down brothels and illegal gambling operations as the summer protest season winds down.

Sounds like he used to be on the sports desk.

I didn't know we had a "summer protest season" here. What's the subject for the "fall protest season?"

If I might be allowed to make a suggestion for the winter protest season, if it's not already booked up, how about protesting protesters? I'd like to see some street protests against street protests. And if you throw in some cheerleaders, I'll buy the popcorn.

We know what the spring protest season will be about: that perennial favorite, unqualified, perverted, drunken, drug-addled, fraudulent foreign ESL teachers. Did I cover it? Hey, Korea, could you please come up with something new this year, besides demanding that I prove my diploma is real six times per month?

How about "poor personal hygiene?" Then you can have random inspections of our underwear to make sure we change it every day. My homosexual principal would love that theme.

Maybe they're "shocked" to find out there's prostitution on Hooker Hill. Rolling Eyes

This will be just like the DVD ban. It will last a month, maybe two, then everything goes back to normal.
