Years ago I took my laptop to a computer repair shop in Itaewon to be fixed. Sorry, I can`t remember exactly what they did to it - it might have been a virus removal. The shop had been recommended by other expats, and I left it with them for 2-3 days. Other than thinking the Won 90,000 bill was a bit high, I had no complaints.

DIRECTIONS:
From the main street in Itaewon, walk up the short side alley to the right and alongside of the Hamilton Hotel. At the T-junction, turn right and you`ll see the computer repair shop a couple shops along on the left (or perhaps they had moved over to the right later on); it has an English sign(s).

90,000 to remove a virus is insane.

first try to restore your computer.

Go to help in the start menu. then go to system restore and restore your computer to an earlier setting (before the virus). Then use every anti virus you can. If this does not work.

download

http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10320142.html?cdlPid=10880275
http://www.download.com/Avira-AntiVir-Personal-Free-Antivirus/3000-2239_4-10322935.html?cdlPid=10877501
http://www.download.com/Avast-Home-Edition/3000-2239_4-10019223.html?cdlPid=10879477

install them if you can if your computer (if you can't skip the instal and move on to the next step

Go into safe mode

hold f8 down while starting up (before booting up)

choose safe mode.

run the antivirus (install if you couldn't before).

If this does not work then you have to reinstall windows

thanks for all the advice. i think i'm using windows xp, how do i check? i think the virus is one of those ones that got on my computer and then pretends to be my own antivirus asking me to pay to remove it.

when i browse through screens on the c drive i get a message saying "attention, renata! we have detected some dangerous viruses" etc. but it looks suspicious, for example two spaces where there should be one in the middle of a sentence. it 'recommends' that i get some anti virus stuff but whether i click yes or no it automatically opens a page 'totalsecure' and starts downloading something to my computer. have run two anti-virus things from seemingly reputable sources but it's still doing it.

i will try what you recommended, thanks.

wow, system restore worked. thanks!

don't suppose you know how to fix this problem as well? Razz

every time my computer starts up i get an error message saying this

"CLI.EXE - Application Error

The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135). Click on OK to terminate the application."

it makes that 'something's gone wrong' noise and i have to click ok every time. is there any way i can tell the computer that it doesn't need to tell me about this so frequently?

thanks again Smile

Okay system restore will not remove the virus it just uninstalled it.

Download those programs which I listed and run them should fix most things. Just make sure you put it in safe mode first.

THIS is from the kxvo.exe (or similar flavor of) auto run virus.

Read this or get a "geek" friend to read it for you.
It is NOT hard to get rid of but you do have to follow the steps.

I'm not sure installing more than one antivirus is a good idea. IME, antivirus programs tend to "attack" each other, which can dramatically slow down your machine. I'd install one, try it, and if it doesn't work, uninstall it and try another one.

If I have this problem I just go to google, type in the error message (or process if it's a strange new process) and read the various forums that discuss said virus. A bit of research goes a long way!

As long as only one of them have the resident protection enabled it shouldn't be a problem. I have all three on my computer and only have avast running, while the other two I give a scan every month or two.
