A friend of mine just emailed me about her housing situation here in Incheon with a Public school. Her's what she said in her message..

'The school tried to make a contract with the owner of the apartment but it fell through. The owner does not like the type of contract the school wants to sign. The school proposes I move into another officetel complex closer to work - the monthly fee is W450,000. The school is tight budgeted and cannot pay more than W400,000 for the housing fee anywhere. At the officetel complex, the school proposes I pay the extra 50 000 won a month because the monthly pay is 450 000won. My coteacher rationalized that it would be the same as busfare if I lived at Arts Center and travelled to work each day*Art Center is where they tried to make a contract with the apartment owner[fell through].* The school wants to know whether I can[will] accept this proposal right away. I am almost saying yes. What do you think?

Can you offer your ideas to help her with this dilemma?

Thanks.

Is the new officetel nicer? cleaner? newer? closer to work? If so, I wouldn't have a problem with it. If I couldn't see it beforehand, I wouldn't do it.

My school is not rich and pays 450 for my place. 50000 is not a lot of money for them. I think they are burning you.

What he said.

I pay another 50,000 per month on the school's contribution to live in a big place. It was this or add a 5M deposit. With 6% interest these days and a bad housing market, I'd rather hold onto my own money and pay the monthly for peace of mind.

Unless you live in the middle of nowhere, they won't find a place for 400 anyway.

Here's my idea -

Tell your friend to say "No." and make the school pay the whole W450,000. Cool

Housing will be supplied (as stipulated by the contract)

Article 10(Housing)
1. Employer shall provide Employee with housing. All efforts will be made to provide an apartment within walking distance to the school or near transport facilities as indicated by Employee.

제10조(주거)

and the discussion ends there.

She is NOT obligated to pay the extra 50k (unless she is stupid enough to agree to it).

my school last year was low income as well, and i still received nice housing without having to pay extra myself. it's the school's responsibility, and despite what the school is saying, they can afford it. they're just trying to nickle and dime you. i feel for your friend though, sounds like the year might be tough
