Can anyone recommend sights/things worth seeing in Osaka. I know about Kyoto being a short train ride away (around 40 mins?) and would like to go there. |

Shinsaibashi and Namba areas are highlights. America-mura, etc...go down by the river with the neon lights everywhere near Namba Station...and of course America-Mura which has tons of amazing live music, tourist stuff, great bars, great clubs, and very interesting to walk around (subculture galore in this area).
Osaka is a great city...particularly if you have any interest whatsoever in going out, drinking, high energy places, or fun places in general. I just spend five days there last weekend (one of several times I've been to Osaka). Love it there.
Kyoto is great for the opposite stuff - tranquil and temple galore. |

Hey TigerBeer,
Thanks for the info.
Where would you recommend staying? Ideally with a price around $30-40 per night in a central location for getting around the city.

Check out the visa run thread, there's a link to a cheap capsule hotel. I took a day trip to Himeji, the castle was amazing, the gardens were beautiful, and up the mountain are temples where the Last Samurai was filmed. |

I always stay at a $25/night hotel room two subway stations south of Namba Station (which is a really cool area).
It's called something like the New Chuo Hotel...something like that....you can find it on www.hostelworld.com with a search for Osaka....2500 yen...its the cheapest one that is still a Hotel and not a Hostel. |
