If drilling is a short-term project until a plausible long-term sollution can be found then I'm all for it Gopher. the reality is that we and the world are dependent on oil. We need to lay down a hardcore program with the appropriate financing that will find an alternative.

Standards for fuel efficiency need to be upgraded.

For now though the reality is that drilling is necessary and we should short-term accept the evil while pushing hard for a long-term sollution.

I think timetables should be set. Sort of like the moon challenge. The president should declare by X date we will have an alternative to switch to. Then put your dollars where your mouth is and fund a program (like NASA) with the best scientists in the field to meet the goal.

I believe that sinking new wells now and drilling and raping the Alaskan landscape won't show any effects on market prices for at least 18 months or more. (Likely more.) That's what people mean when they say it won't work.

The rest of what you say here I agree with entirely.

Palin is trying to sell herself as "of the people" and "regular folk" but I think it's not hard to see that she's a cheerleader for Big Oil. That's the kind of thinking that got us into this mess.

"Raping the landscape" is shrill and not conducive to reasoned debate on such a topic as this.

"Shrill" is a sexist term applied to women who speak up and don't know their place, just as "uppity" is a derogatory term for balcks who wish to be treated as equals. You know this and you are seeking to insult me in a sexual way, calling my manhood into question and disputing my right to state my opinion. Such discourse has no place in a reasoned debate such as this.

I'm better than you, though, so I willwithdraw "rape" and substitute "destroy" or "damage." Happy, now.

The point stands, though, that it won't work. Drilling the Alaskan wilderness will not solve the problem of high oil prices. The root cause of the market fluctuations about oil is the emergence of China and India as industrialized that want to consume petrochemicals today at the same rate that North America and Europe have done for the past three-quarters of a century.

The best, and probably the only workable solution is a crash course and heavy investment in alternative energy sources, something on the level of the cxommitment America made to plant a flag on the moon in the 60s. We've shown we can do this kind of thing, and it will benefit the economy in myriads of ways.

I think you probably agree with me about that, so leave your feuding off for now, why don't you? Your post had no purpose besides a sidelong swipe and me, nothing to do with the discussion at all. Get with the same program you are promoting, okay?

Voting for or against someone because of their supporters is silly.

In any case, Bucheon Bum, you should probably not let mere internet people influence your vote

Nope. Bad idea. What you should do instead is base your vote on Michael Moore. Wink

This is especially since Sarah Palin was an avowed Ron Paul supporter, endorsed by the Libertarian Party for Governor, and selected because she can bring many of Ron Paul's supporters back to the party.

Looks like the kids might have been named after the places where they were conceived.

ps, the voting process in America is a joke at best. I mean, show me another country where you win but still lose? WTF??? No wonder so many people cant be bothered in voting.

Well, Canada for one. In 1988, the Tories got 43% of the vote, which was less than the combined total of the Liberals and the NDP(which was over 52%). But the Tories still ended up with a majority of the seats. Please note that this was not a minority government, in which the largest minority party was backed up by another minority party, but rather an outright majority.

And I would assume that the same thing is possible in any country adhering to the "first past the post" British parliamentary system.

My thoughts exactly. I wonder if his lower lip quivered as he wrote that.

Where were you, Bobster, when H. Reid called S. Palin "shrill and sarcastic," you hypocrite? Note my lack of Arrow and Question or Arrow and Exclamation , and for obvious reasons...

The topic, my good man. It's not me, and it's not you. You started the insults and I gave none back. You continue with it.

The topic.

Read the substance of our remarks. Once again, I'll say it. We agree. But that's not enough. You need to prove what a big strong guy you are ... and all because you disagreed with my use of a very common metaphor about tecnological destruction of the wilderness.

Come now, my friend and esteemed colleague, what's the real source of your ire - when speaking of virgin forests, is a little rape among friends too much for you to bear honestly speaking of?

For American women:

Palin's Rules

If Sarah Palin is elected VP, and has to succeed McCain, she would change the rules for women in the United States.

Under Palin Rules, if you get raped and you want the police to find and prosecute your assailant, you must pay for the "rape kit" to collect semen. This was the official policy of the city of Wasilla, instituted afte Palin became mayor mayor.
Quote:

Mayor Palin fired Irl Stambaugh in March 97 and replaced him with Charlie Fannon. Chief Fannon than pushed through a change that resulted in the city of Wasilla charge rape victims pay $300-$1,200 for their own rape kit.

http://fray.slate.com/discuss/forums/thread/1781794.aspx

Don't believe anyone, especially a woman, could be so callous? Alaska's former governor, Tony Knowles, says the Palin Rule forced the State Legislature to pass a statewide law prohibiting this practice.

Quote:
Knowles broke new ground while answering a reporter's question on whether Wasilla forced rape victims to pay for their own forensic tests when Palin was mayor.

True, Knowles said.

Eight years ago, complaints about charging rape victims for medical exams in Wasilla prompted the Alaska Legislature to pass a bill -- signed into law by Knowles -- that banned the practice statewide.

"There was one town in Alaska that was charging victims for this, and that was Wasilla," Knowles said

A May 23, 2000, article in Wasilla's newspaper, The Frontiersman, noted that Alaska State Troopers and most municipal police agencies regularly pay for such exams, which cost between $300 and $1,200 apiece.

"(But) the Wasilla police department does charge the victims of sexual assault for the tests," the newspaper reported.

It also quoted Wasilla Police Chief Charlie Fannon objecting to the law. Fannon was appointed to his position by Palin after her dismissal of the previous police chief. He said it would cost Wasilla $5,000 to $14,000 a year if the city had to foot the bill for rape exams.

"In the past we've charged the cost of exams to the victims' insurance company when possible," Fannon told the newspaper. "I just don't want to see any more burden put on the taxpayer."

An effort to reach Fannon by phone Wednesday was not successful....

Oh, and if you get pregnant as a result of a rape, you will be required, by Palin Rules, to have the child. Get an abortion and you go to jail, along with your doctor under Palin Rules.

Knowles spoke about Palin reluctantly.

Quote:
As a former governor, Knowles said, he's reluctant to criticize an active governor. But he decided to make an exception with Palin.

"In this situation it's not just a sitting governor," he said. "Our current governor is a candidate for the vice presidency and a heartbeat away from the presidency."
