I have 2 weeks vacation coming up and no plan. I have no desire to sit around korea the whole time, but dont know where to go. I have already been to Thailand, The Philippines and japan. I was considering Malaysia, but dont know much about it.

Anyone who has been and wants to shed some personal light would be much appreciated.

I've not been there yet, but I've heard Malaysia is good. How about do Malaysia with a side trip to Singapore? May as well do the 'Pore while you're down there.

I can imagine myself on a trip around Singapore:

"Hmmm. This place looks like a _______ place to teach English." I can't fill in the blank yet, but that's exactly what I'd be doing. I do that everywhere I go.

Has some great beaches. Cheap food for the most part. Alcohol isn't so cheap, especially compared to Thailand. Penang is a cool city to check out. KL is all right. What are you into?

i was just in Penang, and i loved it. i flew down to BKK and caught an Air Asia flight down (RT from BKK under $200). the beach itself didn't compare to, say, Boracay, but there are other islands better for beaches, if you have 2 weeks that's plenty of time to get to them. there's a lot to do on Penang island, temples, British Colonial stuff, jungle hiking, water sports, etc. the food was awesome, and cheap too. i stayed in a pretty sweet hotel - the waver runner inn or something like that on batu ferrenghi beach. the ocean was a literal stone's throw from my patio, in that i could actually throw a stone into the ocean from it. a/c and cable, $40 a night.

I've been to Malaysia a few times, and it is always good. Every country is interesting on some level or another, and Malaysia has some very good plusses that make it more interesting - food and beaches and English (spoken easily by many) and a relatively clean eco-friendly country compared to Thailand being several of the highlights.

Malaysia sounds like its well worth a visit.
Tho' perhaps best for couples?
Or for individuals looking for a quiet, relaxing time?

Avoid Kota Kinabalu, it's not worth it. The people weren't friendly, prices weren't cheap, and I really wished I was elsewhere when I was there in May.

If you have two weeks, then I'd split my time between TWO destinations and not just stay in Malaysia.

was in kl and melaka this summer, both were very nice and inexpensive. If you go to Melaka a word of warning about the Aldy Hotel, they have a band that plays downstairs until midnight that you can hear up in your room. rooms were nice and the location was perfect near the old town. In KL the KL tower takes you higher than they skybridge at the Petronas Towers so go there instead

getting around is cheap, bus to melaka from kl ran around US$10 for 2 of us and US$15-20 from Melaka to Singapore. plus you got air asia

Singapore can be very expensive. rooms run about 2x what they run in malaysia. If you want a bargain on a love hotel there is a chain call the fragrence inn, they are all over the place and on weekends they drop their prices when the malaysian workers go back home. overall its nice, clean etc. shopping is not as good as bkk. oh just go to the raffles hotel for pics. DONT get a drink there. Glass of house wine and a Tiger Beer draft ran us US$40!!!!!!!!

If you go, I suggest you rent or buy a bicycle and enjoy the coasts. For gastronomy, Malaka is unrivaled for street food and hawker/auntie stalls. KL is nice but can be done in 1 or 2 days. Check out the batu caves and butterfly/bird sanctuary. I don't know much about the beaches.

Singapore is lovely as well. If you are a foodie it is paradise found. The nightlife is great too, if you like more of an upperclass (yet affordable) vibe.
