I was given a decent 3G phone from a friend and took it into KTF to register it. I was told I couldn't do anything with it...no pay as you go, no contract, nothing. Why? Because foreigners are only allowed 2G phones.
Is this bollox, or is this a actual policy of phone companies? My phone is Show and KTF.

It is because our ID nubbers are different from Koreans ID numbers ( how I'm not sure )and the phone companies computer system won't accept our ID numbers. At least that is how it was explained to me.

They were speaking to a friend with me, who is Korean. They were adamant, and she agreed it was a load of bollox. They were phoning head office and were being told 'foreigner cannot have phone'!
Seems to be bang out of order, but I might just get a Korean to register for me and use it under contract with them. |

Everytime I go into a cell phone shop looking for a contract phone, I get the same ol' "위국인 안뒈요!" with the crossed wrists thing.
Just don't bother. Either find a Korean to do it, or get a card phone. |

| Yea, phone business is rubbish. I almost had me a phone, but it was going to be a 3 year contract with no explanation of monthly cost or how many minutes I get or how much per minute nor a monthly plan to my knowledge. |

Maybe you should explain some more if you want to actually be helpful. How did you get it? Is it with KTF? Did you register it yourself? Are you married to a Korean etc. Did your school supply it to you? Your condition may not be the same as the OPs
I also have a 3G phone but it is registered under my Korean girlfriend's name. It is also with SK. |

I have two 3G phones. One is with Show/KTF and the other is with T/SK. I registered both myself and not through a school or a company. I am not married to a Korean. |

Sort of. Here's definitively how it works: It is because your Account Holder Banking ID number with your bank (a hidden number for direct debitting, not your account number) won't co-relate with your ARC/Nat ID number. The bank ID # is the number that phone stores must use on your documents. Banks simply use the Nat ID number for Korean people, sometimes for E2 visa holders, too when they set up their bank accounts - but sometimes they use composites of various numbers for us, like numbers of passport etc or any number. The way to get the correct number if you are having problems is to visit your bank. Even then you may be hard pressed to get it. But there is help. ㅜ
About the phone, it is most likely out of date. Notice that they say you 'cannot have phone,' not 'any phone' but likely, 'the phone.' Dropping article favorite way to misunderstand. Anyway, KTF sucks. Get a cheap new phone with LG. Throw the KTF SK one away.
My phone is six months old. I had to get a new sim card due to temorarily suspending that phone for another and then back again. In the lag time the sim card became useless. A new one had to be back ordered and took two weeks to get delivered to a specialty store one of the few in Incheon. Without the simcard the phone is useless. And, it took a bit of effort to get it.
If you want to get your Banking ID number try taking this to your bank teller:
이분이 핸드폰을 사시려고 하는데 통장을 맨처음 만들때 여권으로 하셔서 아마도 은행에서 예금자 등록번호를 조합하셨을 거예요. 핸드폰을 사시려면 예금자 등록번호가 필요합니다. 번호를 알려 주시면 감사 하겠습니다.
My family has a cellphone store here in Bucheon. If you want a phone without BS told to you feel free to PM. However, like other cellphone stores there are sometimes problems due to that outlined above about the sim card. Better to just get a new phone. The card cost is 9900 won but the time to realize it needs a new one and to get a new one is measured in several hours.

Yeah I have a 3G phone under my name through KTF/Show. I have no idea what the 3G even means to be honest.
My co-teacher went down to the store to help me sign-up, his friend worked there as some sort of manager. Maybe that helped. I also went directly to the local KTF office, and not through one of the various dealers you see everywhere. |

Cheers for that mate. Seems like too much trouble. I was paraphrasing when I wrote 'cannot have phone'. The phone is brand new, as far as I know, although I was given it. I think I will just get my hands on a different phone. |
