Anyway, yes, the article might be forgivable after a night of heavy drinking, but otherwise no way. It certainly confirms that blatant discrimination towards white working classes is perfectly acceptable in modern society. |

But you know, the actual movers and shakers of American policy probably don't really care if the CBC gives voice to anti-American sentiment. Anyone in the states whose paying attention to Canada knows full well that, for all the nationalist bluster, Canadians can always be counted on to vote in governments that are commited to the status quo on the North American continent. I mean, the most left-wing of the two major parties is the Liberals, but the most radical, stick-it-to-the-man thing that they ever did was refuse to send troops to Iraq. Which, in the grand scheme of things, likely didn't have much impact on the way things went down over there anyway.
Other than that, I'm hard-pressed to think of one thing that the Liberals ever did that was a challenge to Uncle Sam. To say nothing of the even more openly pro-American Conservatives. Hell, even Rick "stupid Americans" Mercer is now a big cheerleader for the Afghanistan effort. Not surprising, given that nationalists can usually be relied on to support the troops. |

| OTOH, it is inappropriate. Even if it is without consequence. We should hold the publicly funded national media to a higher standard that juvenile pissing and moaning about the United States. |

Yeah, I remember the 1984 LA Olympics, The Journal(old show) had some guy doing a guest editorial about how tacky and hyperpatriotic it all was. Four years later, of course, the Tories were re-elected on a platform of free trade with the US. |

Well, I know. But you framed your original argument in terms of Canada being economically integrated to the US, so I assumed you meant that anti-Americanism on the CBC might have some negative impact on that. |

If Canada from coast to coast had the same views of the United States as do the Liberal sections the impact would be large. Cooperation with Republican governments would be impossible. No politician would dare deal with Bush etc. Right now, Alberta and the other "blue provinces" keep this in check.
For evidence, look at the new NDP ad running. I posted it on another thread. The USA is the boogie man in 'left' Canadian politics. |

I don't think the political parties pursue pro-American policies in order to curry favour with Alberta. The Liberals never had more than one seat in that province for their whole 16-year Chretien/Martin stretch. Didn't stop them from keeping NAFTA in place. |

| I don't think they do either. I think that the large (majority?!) conservative vote - who totally does not identify with the urban anti-American leftism of Mallek - keeps the country sane. |
