Clinton expert John Harris submits this:

There they were in Harlem on Thursday, the 42nd president and the Democrat who hopes to be the 44th, for a two-hour lunch hour chat at Bill Clintons office.

It is not at all clear that Barack Obama particularly wants Clintons advice about how to win the presidency...but many Democrats believe it is increasingly clear that he could use it...

We do know that Clinton was happy to share his thoughts. He recently offered 10 minutes of heres what Obama needs to do wisdom while standing in the popcorn line with someone he just met Very Happy at a New York movie theater, according to one Democrat privy to the conversation.

The Clinton-Obama meeting was closed. We dont know for sure what they said.

But it is not hard to make an educated guess. Here, based on 16 years experience watching Bill Clinton campaign and interviews with a half-dozen veterans of his political teams is a reasonably safe bet about his campaign advice to Barack Obama:

1. Dont make this about you.

2. Define yourself through policies yours and theirs.

3. Have more fun.

4. Make the election about something big.

5. Spend more time speaking to your opponents.

6. Dont take Hillary voters for granted.

7. Stop smoking whatever it is you are smoking.

8. And while you are at it, give me an apology.

Obama would do well to at least listen to this kind of advice, no matter if it comes directly from Clinton or from this Harris guy. Obama has not been a great campaigner. He failed to close the deal when he was leading Hillary Clinton and he wasn't able to close the deal when was leading McCain. In my opinion, #1, #2 and #4 are the big issues. While you don't want to get so specific that the election turns into a referendum on the details of a specific proposal, Obama needs to be more specific than just 'change'. For one example, he should say something like, "We've come to the point where we have to deal with Social Security. It must be reformed, but do you want to turn the White House over to the party that has hated the program for 75 years and wants to gut it?"

Here's the problem: Few voters know that Obama would cut the taxes of the vast majority of Americans by far more than McCain would. Few know Obama would guarantee everyone access to health care or that McCain's health plan might endanger coverage many already have. Few know that Obama has a coherent program to create new jobs through public investment in roads, bridges, transit, and green technologies.

In short, few Americans know what (or whom) Obama is fighting for, because he isn't really telling them. And few know that McCain's economic plan is worse than President Bush's. As Jonathan Cohn points out in The New Republic, McCain would add $8.5 trillion in new debt over the next ten years. It's McCain who should be on the defensive.

It should not be hard for Obama to use crisp, punchy language to force the media and the voters to pay attention to the basic issue in this election: whether the country will slowly continue down a road to decline, or whether, to invoke a slogan from long ago, we can get the country moving again.

One test in the coming weeks will be whether Obama continues to contest North Carolina....

But Democratic politicians say that won't happen unless Obama grabs the campaign back. "One of the criticisms is that he hasn't cut through all the Republican rhetoric to reveal in a clear and simple way what his plan is, which I believe would resonate with the electorate...

Rep. David Price..."Obama has "offered economic proposals with a lot of promise ... but there has not been the direct personal connection that there needs to be." Obama "needs people to feel angry, he needs to get people to feel something is at stake."

McCain has shown he wants the presidency so badly that he's willing to say anything, true or false, to win power. Obama can win by fighting for what he believes. What he can't do is wait for the media to call McCain out -- although they should -- or expect voters to know he'll fight for them when they are not yet sure that he's willing to stand up for himself.

Clinton doesn't give two shits about Obama. Obama went to Harlem to "kiss the ring," as was aptly stated, but the bottom line is this: the Clintons don't like to lose. Obama will lose this one. He can't win. Hillary is set to run in 2012.

Fie on you, John McCain! Fie! Fie! You are a computer illiterate. Fie!

Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

I don't think Obama has quite got the message yet.

"Thrown off stride by a hard-charging campaign from Republican rivals John McCain and Sarah Palin, Barack Obama moved Friday to reclaim the spotlight and assure worried supporters that he can and will fight back.

"We will respond with speed and ferocity to John McCain's attacks and we will take the fight to him," Obama campaign manager David Plouffe said in a memo Friday.

"But we will do it on the big issues that matter to the American people. We will not allow John McCain and his band of Karl Rove disciples to make this big election about small things."

Obama immediately launched a new ad that notably omitted any mention of Palin an abrupt switch after days of criticizing her.

It was an apparent recognition that the Democrats have helped raised the Alaska governor's profile by criticizing her for days, a move that may have helped the Republicans. Palin's drawn huge crowds, energized the Republican base and helped Republicans draw the kind of volunteers they needed, but lacked, to turn out votes in battleground states.

The new Obama ad hit McCain hard, ridiculing him as a computer illiterate who doesn't know how to use e-mail and working to cast the 72-year-old Arizonan as out of touch with ordinary Americans.

Independence Day was just a movie, dear. Why would Obama need to fly a jet?

I saw the add on CNN this morning. I am not sure how effective it will be. Might alienate some old folks. Will definitely play well with the younger voters, but Obama already has them firmly in his camp.

Point taken. But then, does McCain really need to use e-mail? Assuming he has staff members who can, I really don't see why it would be a neccessity.

I found that the whole "anti-nostalgia" thing(the rubik's cube, etc) had kind of a forced quality to it. Like, you could almost hear the backroom boys saying "okay, we gotta appeal to these Gen Xers and Yers who like to talk about old pop culture, but also like to laugh at geezers. Anyone got any ideas?"

I'm actually surprised the ad made it off the drawing board in the form that it did. It really was in need of a re-write for subtlty.

Mind you, reactions have been happening with lightning speed in this campaign, and I haven't heard anything on this one yet, so maybe the Obamaites will get away with this.

Well, crap! I forgot to put the link in to the original article. I have no idea where it is now.

It isn't a joke. Someone wrote that that Obama ad is 'hard-hitting'. I think it's a crock. It'll only offend other computer illiterates--if even that. That ad is a waste of money. How did it even get onto the drawing board? They should be showing McCain flip flops or being insensitive or something.

Learning to send an email is quite a bit easier than learning how to fly a jet.

Technology is the largest S&P sector at over 19%. Knowing the difference between Macs and PCs may not be as important as knowing the difference between Shia and Sunni. But it would seem to suggest that he may not be well versed on the issues facing us in the 21st century.
