My god, the authorities are not allowing men to have their asses hanging out of their pants. I don't understand why anyone would be upset by this. |

But what is the next thing to be deemed "inappropriate public attire", and by whom, and with what consequences?
If someone's concerned about asses hanging out, what about this guy?--who's famous for his clothing--or lack of it.

But he's a NY white guy in his skivvies, not a black kid in Florida... |

Meanwhile, 3 blocks down the street there was a gang related murder, 3 rapes, 25 fights and 7 robberies.
There REALLY, really must have been more important to prosecute for these cops. |

Canuckistan, that attire was inspired by the jail culture. Often gang members dress this way. There is a serious gang problem with the gangs in major cities and with lawlessness. It's not a joke, really. I had to teach in the inner city, and we had to catch people dressed like that and have them wear proper attire. This would, of course, target African American males who in many cases would be influenced by gang culture and may be in gangs. |

I suppose it is a 'pre-crime' program.
I have no idea how you fix the situation (legacy of slavery and segregation manifested in the war on drugs) but it is what it is. First things, end the war on drugs and find a way to dramatically improve education. But the family breakdown is going to be nearly impossible to reverse. No amount of 'hope' or white-guilt and blame-whitey can make black fathers stay with their kids. As Mr. Obama knows.

You'll notice one of the dudes has teardrop tats on his face. Those represent people he has killed. |

It could be argued that members of the Mafia have a certain sartorial style. Perhaps more conformist to the "mainstream", so despite their misdeeds they get busted less for "looking like Mafia" than for the crimes they actually commit.
Will it stop gang members from committing crimes?
Unlikely I think. |

The mafia example is reasonable. There is a healthy dose of racial profiling in the topic of the OP.
Will it stop them from committing crimes? Yes, of course. They will be in jail, even if for a short time and I suspect some will have outstanding legal issues that will ensure a longer stay. Is this a reasonable way to deal with these problems? No. Of course not. |

The Mafia members either dress in leather or suits, but many people who are Caucasian dress that way whether in Europe or North America, so I am not sure that works. Also, black people who are not ghetto, not associated with gangs or gang culture don't dress like that.
At any rate, these fellows are dressing in what may be viewed as an obscene way. Do people really want other walking around in their underwear, so to speak. Schools bust students who dress like that, and that includes black administrators. Many African Americans support this, actually. |

The more obvious reason is that Florida is a considerably more conservative than Manhattan. Of course, it is easy to think it is strictly about race. |

I think the right way to go about it is by adding a vote to the ballot that says:
Do you agree that sagging pants looks like an absolutely ridiculous scourge on society that should be punishable by public caning?
Yes No |

I remember this thing discussed before, and the elements of African society that are tired of the gang culture taking over didn't oppose this.
The gang problem is really out of control in so many schools and cities.
This is not quite like the issue with the Mullahs. The Mullahs stop people for violating a religious dress code. This is obviously obscene to most people if you are going around dressing like a prison b**ch and think that's good style and if it connects to a violent aspect of the culture.
It's fair game. I think this is part of an attempt to crack down youth gang culture. However, some libertarians would argue this would partially die down if drugs were legalized. Would the price go down if consuming it was decriminalized? I am not sure a person should get a felony for consuming such drugs. I am not a major fan of decriminalizing drugs, but it is a fueling the gang problem, to some extent, and if there is less profit, would the drug use go down? No, but gangs would have a harder time getting new recruits. |

When I was living in Boston a few years back, one of the school districts tried to ban female students who were wearing low rise jeans with thongs that rode up when the girls bent over or were sitting at their desks.
I had no idea, but apparently, this was a violation of their rights! However, it was NOT considered racist since this was a predominately white district, but it was viewed as sexist by quite a few.
When I studied Poli Sci and gov't during my undergrad days, my profs lectured on the right to bear arms but nothing about the right to bare your ass. Perhaps, I missed that lecture? |
