While I was very happy with my high-speed Hanaro internet connection, seems Japan has blown the competition out of the water.

Quote:
AMSTERDAM (AP) "Quality" may be hard to define, but Japanese broadband Internet connections have it, according to a survey released Friday.

No matter how researchers from Oxford University's Said Business School tweaked their definitions, Japan came out best by far.

Sweden was next, followed by the Netherlands, Latvia and South Korea, with the United States ranked 16th and Britain 24th out of 42 countries covered. India was last place.

Is this actually new? I was under the impression they (Japan) had the fastest connections (for non-commercial use for years). Am I wrong?

It's interesting that Latvia is near the top.

Yeah considering Lativa only has two computers about 6 inches apart with the internet connected between the two computers...No wonder they are near the top when it comes to speed....They only have to travel 6 inches for the internet

And I remember the big fight I had with my first wife in 2000 when I wanted to upgrade from 28.8 dial-up. (Wash DC)

As someone who regularly uses high speed internet connections in both Korea and Japan, I find this claim rather strange to say the least. I do note that the source is the Japan Times, which might explain it.

My connection in Japan is the fastest one my internet provider (Yahoo BB) has available at 100M/s. My in-laws place in Seoul has internet which is advertised as being the same speed. However, I have found there is no comparison. In Japan for bit torrent downloads I sometimes get up to 1500kb/s; but in Korea the same downloads come much faster at speeds of up to 5000kb/s. And it's the same when I've been online elsewhere in Japan or Korea - speeds are noticeably faster in Korea.

Incidentally, something that the report doesn't mention is the speed with which you actually get the damn internet connected in the first place after telling them you want it. In Japan, this is usually about 2-3 weeks. I'm pretty sure that in Korea it's possible to get conencted within a day or so or less.

I have heard that Japan has the cheapest broadband internet in the world. From a Japanese source again though, so not sure if it's true.

First, broadband internet is NOT everywhere in Korea. I live on a university campus and am unable to get my own internet broadband connection from any provider, not KT, not Hanaro, not LG. Nobody. Second, the article is from AP not Japan Times. I too routinely use broudband in both Japan and Korea and personally find Japan's service much quicker. OK, much is a tad exaggeration but fatser regardless. When I lived off campus I had Hanaro and was impressed with the service but it was still slower than my old internet connection back in Japan. Additionally, Korea is a much smaller country and as such, much easier to provide coverage. When I was back in America, I felt like I had gone back to dial-up service. High speed in the states needs to be redefined. Lame!

I have 100m and regularly download at 5000KB/s and sometimes even 7 - 8,000KB/s.

Which internet provider did you use in Japan and when was this? And how did you notice it was faster in Japan?

I'm fairly happy with the internet service I get in Japan. It's streets ahead of anything I've used in the UK and, to be fair, it's just for downloads that I really notice getting a faster service in Korea. For day to day web browsing the difference isn't usually that noticeable.

It's definitely true that Japan has largely caught up with Korea with regards to internet speeds. Several years ago it was a long, long way behind. Nowadays I could well believe someone who said their internet was faster in Japan than one they've used in Korea, whilst I'd have been more than a little sceptical of such a claim few years back. But in my experience, which I accept isn't necessarily the definitive one, spending almost equal amounts of time in both countries, overall service is still more often faster in Korea than in Japan.

As regards access and provision of broadband, Japan is much better than most other countries that I've been to. But it isn't as widespread as in Korea. It might not be "everywhere" in Korea but I'm certain more people find it easier to get access to it than in Japan. The reasons for this are partly social as the PC Bang on every other street corner isn't the kind of thing that would take off in Japan.
