I am sure Pierre Elliot Trudeau avait ses fautes, surement. Ca va sans dire comme tous les premiers ministres. I think, in the aggregate, he made many Canadians proud, and many people all over the world liked Trudeau. He was also generally moderate, a centrist. Now, he sometimes had this arrogant way and would people down in a way that was unbecoming, because he thought he had to be a tough prime minister. I am not sure about the context of those critics in Vancouver. Were they having a bad attitude vis-a-vis the prime minister? What was the exact context. The words don't sound good, obviously, but sometimes a sharp retort comes out from leaders.

I remember those comments at the time they were made. I'm pretty sure that the protestors were complaining about the economy, and "get off your ass and work" was meant to suggest that they could better themselves through working harder. The sort of thing you'd hear from someone like Ralph Klein or Mike Harris.

To me, it's not that he was arrogant, as one thing(among others) that I do admire about him was that he wasn't afraid to speak his mind. The problem for me is the context in which he was being arrogant. His liberal admirers like to quote "Just watch me" as if he was saying "Just watch me take on the powerful corporations and build a Just Society for all". When in fact, what he was basically saying was "Just watch me toss a bunch of hippies in jail for a few weeks".

And who knows. Maybe there's a case to be made for invoking the WMA during the October Crisis. I'm guessing, though, that if similar tactics had been employed by the American government against(for example) the Weather Underground, Canadian liberals would be denouncing that as a blatant abuse of state power.

I should say that I admire Trudeau deeply for the Charter Of Rights. Interesting, though, that to a large degree, this involved an importation of American-style jurisprudence(ie. making laws subject to judicial review against an enforcable rights document) into Canada. Whereas Trudeau's defenders like to portray him as the champion of all things Canadian.
