Hello,
I live in one of those one room apartments in a small building populated with foreign teachers (though I dont know many) and also some young Koreans. I was just wondering if it is considered rude here to practice an instrument at home. I have my break in the middle of the day, so most ppl should be at work (unless they are english teachers like me and have strange scheds) But I can never really hear what goes on in others apartments, but I hear what happens in the hallway very clearly... Im just wondering what you guys think about this... I know there a practice rooms I could rent, but Im not that serious of a player, and I dont even know where to find one if I could... PS... if anyone knows an English speaking flute teacher let me know. Danke..

Sure, but not at night or too early in the morning. When I walk home from lunch and back to work, I often hear flute and piano playing from apartments.
I would say you need to live in Seoul to get any sort of classes and extracurricular activities in English. |

I heard someone playing the flute today. It was, however, early afternoon.
I feel aprehensive about playing my guitar. I should get an electric with headphones. People don't need to hear my terrible guitar playing. Don't know what I can do about practicing the harmonica... |

I play and teach the flute. I have some high-level books and lots of sheet music with me. I also have a Yamaha flute here with me but it pads need replacing so I haven't played in a while. What level are you? |

I blast my acoustic and electric guitars, sing as loud as I want, and practice my skin flute at least 3 times a week.
I never get any complaints from the neighbors, but then again I am pretty talented at all three. |

If any of the metal flute players want to play with a band sometime send me a pm.
We currently have enough skin flutes, although mine might be a piccolo.
Just kidding, it massive. |

Wait for you neighbors to leave their apartment and as soon as they do, immediately go outside and play the flute all the while dancing an interpretive dance.
If the neighbors smile, that means that they approve of your flutefullness and then you can play in your house without a worry since your neighbors gave tacit approval.
If they complain just explain the above and then all will be resolved. |

If you're Korean, it's okay. Millions of them do so. Millions make other kinds of noise as well with no regards to their neighbors.
If you're a foreigner, it's okay until one of your Korean neighbors notices its a foreigner doing something that millions of Koreans do. |

| Back in the 70's, while I was working for a local T.V station in San Diego, I was really into Jazz flute. I'm pretty sure koreans wouldn't appreciate my style. |

To the OP:
Your neighbors might appreciate your flute playing more if you turned it into a "Band Camp" scenario....
"And then I stuck my flute..."
You could soon find yourself the most popular girl on the block amongst the Korean men.... |
