| That Korea simply has so much more history and culture than somewhere like, for instance, the U.S. of A. (which is little more than 200 years old) that those coming here from such a young nation simply find it difficult to adjust? |

| No, it's a foreign country in the far East that is far removed from what home is like in a western country. Sure there is a long history of Confucianism which makes for some different ideology, but it's just the fact of being a stranger in a strange land all alone is tough one that requires bravery. A major ongoing adjustment challenge is communication, last minute work culture, loneliness, and food. I won't go into detail about the food situation, don't even get me started on that. Argggghh! |

So therefore, those from countries with very long histories, Uk and Ireland for example, should have no problem adjusting?
I think you will find that this is not the case. |

The OP asked a really naive question. The Republic of Korea is only 60 years old. That's very young as countries go.
It's always startling when people say the US is only 200. Why do they discount our colonial period when we were developing? Virginia is 400 years old. That's getting to be a respectable age.
Culture? It isn't like we only study our own national culture. We're part of Western Civilization. Our drama and art go back to the ancient Greeks 2,500 years ago. Our religion is 2,000 years old.
I could go on, but I think I've made my point. |

Stupidest thing I've ever read. For a start, your comments in the "on the lash" thread seem to suggest you're from the north-east of England, making you completely unqualified to discuss culture. Your 'culture' is speaking unintelligibly and drinking alcohol to the point of collapse. Secondly, the US has 31 ancestory groups with a population of over a million. That means it's got more than 31 different cultures all mixed together in a completely vibrant melting pot. Korean culture, whilst quaint, is hardly worldbeating. This is reflected in tourism stats. At the top is the US and France with Korea not even charting. If you're so sure of your theory, reference 3 things from Korea's "so much history and culture" and the ways in which people from the US, or other young country, find it difficult to adjust. |

I was talking with a Korean co-worker about something and she says "you know Korea has 4,000 years of history". So I said "Yeah, 4000 years of growing rice". She said "Fu<k you" and ran away. |

I think you're on to something. I find myself overwhelmed by all the Korean things I encounter here, such as tight jeans liberally bedazzled on the ass pockets; instant coffee; SUVs; the mysterious and fascinating little devices called hand-uh pones that everyone seems to have their eyes glued to 24/7; the delectable delights of Paris Baguette (Paris in Korea? who knew?) and Dun-keen Do-Nut-Jeuh. These Koreans really know how to bake! |

The real root of the problem.
Too many people are getting a University liberal arts degree. Not enough people are learning useful trades. These advanced countries need a good place to dump these people. Korea is the perfect place. |
