|
|
I have a 1.1.4 Touch and I want to Jailbreak, and upgrade the firmware to 2.02.
I have a windows computer. What should I do?
Do I jailbreak the 1.1.4 then upgrade to the 2.02? Or when I jailbreak it, does it automatically load 2.02 firmware?
I'm so confused. |

First of all you need iTunes 7.5 or lower. iTunes 8 has been designed not to recognize older versions of the ipod firmware.
Secondly, having 1.1.4 firmware (or downgrading to 1.1.4) is rumored to be best because the hacks for 2.0 are less reliable. After you jailbreak, any firmware upgrades will reset your ipod and you will have to jailbreak again. So, you wouldn't want to upgrade your firmware AFTER a jailbreak.
Firmware is the software that allows the device to communicate with other devices.
Jailbreak means unlocking the device to accept 3rd party software. |

So, I can load all the AppStore applications on a jailbroken 1.1.4 ipod?
** Jailbreaking is such a pain in the ass. Anyone who said, "Why bother paying for the update. Just Jailbreak it" can lick my balls.
There tons of guides out there, but 99% of them are outdated. The software they want you to use to jailbreak (ziphone, pwnage, etc...) are old versions.
Why the hell is this so damn difficult? Not only do I have to make a custom firmware, I gotta put the touch into DFU mode. The "pwn" it. Then put it back into restore mode. Then pwn it again. etc...etc...

Then I try using the new winpwn, everything goes alright until I get the step to put the ipod in the DFU mode. Then it keeps giving me errors.

I'm no expert at it either, but I got my iPod way back when it came out in Korea. I have been upgrading and jailbreaking the whole way. I'm now running the 2.1 firmware and have it jailbroken.
Just head over here and use either their PwnageTool or QuickPwn to get'r done.
The other dude said you can't upgrade from 1.1.4 with iTunes 8??? That doesn't really make much sense to me....why wouldn't it let you?!?! I have never once had any problems with any of the jailbreaking apps and each one has been as reliable as the next. I'd definitely recommend upgrading to 2.1. I really like the new 'Genius' feature. Just make sure you use the jailbreaking apps from the iphone-dev team.
Edit: Sorry dude, didn't see your last post. |

Just to clarify... this dude said that you can't DOWNGRADE your firmware with iTunes 8. So, if you have 1.1.5 firmware and you want to downgrade it for a jailbreak, you won't be able to.
I've done a lot of research on this, and many people have found that a jailbreak on 2.0-2.1 firmware caused some 3rd party apps to freeze. |

It doesn't matter if the tutorials are older. Anything refering to 1.1.4 firmware will still give the same results.
You can install the App store Apps, but you'll have to pay for them. Download through torrents and they're free.
Demonoid has one torrent with ALL of the ipod Apps in one go. |

Because according to lots of reviews i've read, the 1.1.4 jailbreak is more stable. |

There seems to be a fair amount of "guesstimate" bs going on here.
I had a jailbroken 1.1.4 which I upgraded to 2.1 just 2 days ago.
Not only is it possible, it is, in my opinion, worth it. Cydia is MUCH easier to use than Installer. The App store is great (and yes, you can get cracked apps if that's what you want to do).
The only problem you have, as I see it, is that you're running Windows. The Dev Team haven't released (at the time of posting) a new version of Winpwn yet.
This does NOT mean that you're stuck. One method is to download a custom firmware from the net (they're everywhere at the moment, particularly on torrent sites). You can then restore directly from it.
I suggest you do some reading here:
http://forums.macrumors.com/forumdisplay.php?f=115
and around the net and you'll find what you're looking for.
iTunes 8 does have some (minimal) protection in place, but it shouldn't trouble you.
EDIT: I don't know much about Winpwn, but you're either stuffing up the DFU mode (you must be precise) or it is a bit buggy. A guide, and a fix for what you may be encountering, is here: http://sleepers.net/news/2008/08/29/winpwn-25-guide-released/

That's drawing a long bow.
MUCH depends on the original JB method. Ziphone, for instance, was buggy as hell.
Firmware 2.1 is, in my view, quite a step up. |

Looks like I can't jailbreak my ipod.
I've tried 3 different computers with 2 different OSes (XP and Vista).
Everytime I get to the same step on winPwn 2.5 where it says, "Is your iPod powered off and connected to the computer". This is the step wher eyou have to DFU the ipod
When, in expert mode, I click "proceed" and I get the same stupid error each time:
"failed to load itunes mobile device driver".
Day 2 of trying to jailbreak my iPod and still frustrated. |

just do what the above poster said and use a firmware which has already been modified by pwnage. Download one, or have a mac user friend of yours make one for you, and then restore with that modified firmware. |

what is your firmware at now? If its below the 2.01 version, just hit upgrade holding down one of the keyboard keys (i don't know what it is for windows, you can look it up tho). that way you can select a file instead of letting itunes download and install automatically. If its the same version... then i'm not sure. I never ran into that problem. |
