I work at a local hagwon and have made more than the public school folks, until now:

Quote:
SCH DISTRICT #9
4 Vacancies Hadong County School District http://eng.hadong.go.kr/main/
Sept Start: 2 Elem. & 2 Junior High
Teachers 2,500,000 Monthly Pay for all Teachers regardless of Qualification Level

The place is idyllic. Pine trees hug the mountainside. A calming quiet blankets the area. Cool crisp air braces and refreshes. Along gently sloped roads, cherry blossoms, ancient temples, & feudal homes seem to welcome you. It is a picturesque scene straight out of an Asian travelogue. Filled with a rich array of natural & cultural treasures such as the majestic Jiri-san mountain range, a Taoist school, a Zen village, and the picturesque beachfronts-seascapes of Namhae beach, indeed Hadong is a showcase of nature's attractions and breath taking panorama that relaxes, as well as, inspires.
This is Hadong- a quiet place where the rustling of leaves against the wind can be heard. Where the scent of pine refreshes and relaxes.

With my CELTA and 5+ years of experience (2 of them here) I guess it's time to ask my boss for a raise eh?

They forgot to add "one pissed off whitey" in their description.

Some have to keep up with the Joneses. Others have to keep ahead of them. What will it take to make people happy? I wish I knew, because I'd be doing it.

Posting an advert like this...I don't know. Maybe it's the pine needles, but somebody may come down there and try to undercut you.

With qualifications you'd still only be making 2.5 at those schools. Regardless goes both ways right?

Have you been to Hadong? The place is Hooterville. If you like dueling banjos, and don't mind squealing like a pig, you'll be in heaven. They are probably offering a premium because they can't keep teachers for more than 6 months. Guaranteed harassment and abuse.

You have a CELTA with 5 years of experience, and you're still making just 2.5.

I think it's time for a move.

The CELTA looks good if you've got a year or two of experience, IMHO (if people here even know what it is).

Korea doesn't value the CELTA.

When I did the interview with the guy who owns the hagwon down in Busan, he mentioned that it wasn't even on the gov't list of approved TEFL courses for people coming from the Phils (Chamchiman, was that the list he was talking about -- the Philipino one?)

The feeling I'm getting is that they'd rather you spent that huge chunk of cash on an even more expensive and time consuming Sookmyung TEFL, which is the darling of one of LMB's appointees.

Perhaps like any place, Hadong is a great choice for the right person. While I can't imagine 95% of single white male 20-something teachers enjoying it there as much as almost any other place in Korea, I can imagine a settled, car-owning, tired-of-the-city, Korean-speaking long-termer loving it there for a year. The latter also presumably wouldn't allow himself to be subjected to such "harassment and abuse".

Sorry, I don't remember the context; I just remember him basically saying the CELTA wasn't worth it in Korea. Actually, I was kind of dozing at the time, but when he said "CELTA" I looked at YOU not him!

That advertisement was way way out of date .Why was it posted at all! Maybe was a way of getting deceptive promotional advertising by this agent? I enquired about the jobs list. There were no jobs left in Hadong for September. The few jobs on offer for 2.5 million had gone in August. Also 75 % of all the other jobs listed for this province were gone as well.

Pay increases for English teachers, at least according to basic economics, should be good news for all English teachers.

But teacher pay has been so stagnant in this market I wonder if the normal rules apply. Maybe the new regs have changed things.

Have to second that. Those with their MA and the CELTA/DELTA also can get qualified to teach the course, and this provides additional opportunities. The BA alone, no matter what other buzzes and whistles you tag on there, just doesn't cut it anymore.
