The NHIC is providing a health check-up service for the insured once every two years. They can receive the health examination free of charge. The health check-up procedures has two steps.
The first step covers 23 items including oral cavity check-up, chest X-ray, and an electrocardiogram(only for those over 40 years on a voluntary basis). The second confirmative test covers 28 items coming under 8 diseases including tuberculosis and diabetes.

Eligible beneficiaries also can apply for examinations for 5 major cancers which are stomach, colon, breast, liver and cervix cancer. The costs of the cancer test are shared by the NHIC and the beneficiary. In case of stomach, colon, liver, and breast cancer, the NHIC covers 80% of the cost and the beneficiary pays the remaining 20%.

However, preventive treatment services other than treatment of diseases and injuries are not covered by National Health Insurance.
You are kindly advised to ask directly the clinic whether your medical services are covered by NHI.

If you are over 40 (my personal physician says 45) then yeah, a cancer screen once a year is a good idea, As long as it's free. The other tests -- well, TB isn't a big issue in Korea, although if you are someone who does a lot of traveling in southeast asia, it wouldn't hurt.

DO NOT GO! IT'S A TRAP!

I think everyone on this board will agree, this is just an excuse for racist Koreans to weed out the sick foreigners and send them packing.

It applies to Koreans too. So much for that theory. Rolling Eyes

Nope; my colleagues all had to have this too. I was initially suspicious (albeit resigned) at first but then I found out that all public school teachers have a health check every 2 years.

I figure this is an excellent opportunity to get a comprehensive checkup on someone else's nickel.

Sure, anybody can take advantage of it. When they find a Korean with a serious disease, it'll be "here's what you need to get better". When they find a foriegner with a serious disease, it'll be "here's the door, gringo, get out of our country." If I'm not right, why was some guy staring at me the other day when I was walking around with my Korean girlfriend? And an ajumma pushed me, probably trying to feel me for malignant tumors.
