What are the chances that the public school would be willing to pay for the flight upfront rather than reimbursing me for the flight later? Do you think they will pay for the new luggage restriction? |

I just re-signed and booked my flights home and back throught the Government Transportation Request (GTR) process. I just phoned the airline and told them what I wanted. The POE payed the airline upfront and I had my e-tickets within 24 hrs. The 'catch' is one has to use either Korean Air or Asiana for the Korean-domestic and international legs. I won't get my Aeroplan miles. However, I also don't have to wait until I get back to be reimbursed. |

Asiana is part of star alliance so you can get aeroplan miles for flying with them. |

I did, at first, book through Asiana; but they don't fly to YVR and the GTR process requires the main, international leg to be on Korean Air or Asiana.
Bummer! |

C/Monkey: so,
i) book ICN (Incheon) to SEA (Seattle), which Asiana does fly.
Then
ii) fly, or take the bus ($50 1-way? No reservations necessary, just ask at SEA) or the train, to Vancouver.
I've flown or taken the bus SEA-YVR almost every year for the last 6 years...no probs! (Just make sure you get your Asiana and other carrier airmiles ).

"December 22nd, 2006
There is 1 Amtrak train in each direction per day as the previous poster said: northbound at 7:40am and southbound at 6pm (but check these times)...
I always use the Quick Shuttle bus
( http://www.quickcoach.com/schedule.htm ) - they run 7 scheduled buses a day in each direction and their sevice in my experience has always been on time and hassel free. They use the truck crossing over the US border and it has generally been pretty easy even with a bus load of travellers with luggage. Transit time SEA to downtown VAncovuer about 3.5 hours..." |

I thought about flying to Seattle on Asiana, and jumping on a Horison Air connection to Victoria. But, as the flights must be the most direct to the closest international airport (YYJ) the GTR process would not allow it.
I'm back in K-land and all is well. I flew Korean Air/Air Canada and the K-taxpayers footed a bill of almost W3,000,000 for six flights... LOL. Plus, I now have a wack of K-Air frequent flyer miles. |

Don't like paying for luggage? Use a non-North American based carrier. The rest of the planet still has free baggage allowance.
To/from NA destinations:
2 Pieces (max. 23kg(50lbs) per piece)
To/from other global destinations:
2 bags with a maximum combined weight of 20 kilos.

Well, I learnt something new C_Monkey (the GTR process' requirement re: flying to the closest airport), thanks...I'll remember that for later possible jobs
Also, I got a pleasant surprise a couple years ago when my luggage was very overweight: Asiana didn't charge by weight (& my 2nd suitcase was large and heavy!), but simply charged a flat fee of Won 30,000 for the extra piece. |

I'm not positive but I think that international flights are not subject to having to pay for checked luggage. My friend flew from Chile to the US and then to China with no extra fees and I know that she flew Northwest to the US, but I'm not sure on what she flew to China.
Anyways, I made sure when I booked my flight to only book on 1 airline. I ended up flying from MSP to ORD via Northwest but I had booked Korean Air MSP --> ICN so there were no extra charges.
Are you new? I'm not sure if you can get your flight prepaid. It seemed everyone in my EPIK group had paid for their own flight here. It was reimbursed within my first week at my POE. |
