i am currently trying to fill my external hhd media player with downloaded movies from bittorrent.

Which movies would you consider to be 'must haves' in any movie collection?

Pulp Fiction
Annie Hall
Otto e Mezzo (8 1/2)
La Vita e' Bella
Before Sunrise
The Seventh Seal
The Darjeeling Limited
Enter the Dragon
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (the real one...with Gene Wilder)

That's an odd enough assortment.

Apocalypse Now

It's one of the few movies I seem to be able to watch over and over again and am still affected by. At least the original cut, not the crappy overlong new one with the playmates scene. It must be the first time in history that the addition of scantily clad, hot women made something worse.

Here would be mine. Stuff you might watch more than once.

The Third Man
Cassablanca
The Big Lebowski

Every Woody Allen movie before Annie Hall (including A.H.) except the dubbed one. Hannah and Her Sisters (ignore if you hate Woody).

City Lights
Dr. Strangelove
A Clockwork Orange
Psycho
My Man Godfrey
Miller's Crossing
Sabrina (THE ORIGINAL!!! Smile )
Duck Soup
From Here to Eternity

The Hustler
Hud
Cool Hand Luke (all Paul Newman vehicles, so if you don't like him, avoid. But who doesn't like Paul Newman? These are his best).

The Birds
It Happened One Night
Night of the Hunter
The Wild Bunch
Five Easy Pieces

The Killing
Paths to Glory (these two are early Kubrick, just great)

I could go on and on but these are mostly older movies cause I assumed there's a chance you haven't seen them.

Here are some foreign titles if you're not averse to subtitles:

Wild Strawberries
8 1/2
Johnny Stechinno
Smiles of a Summer Night
La Regle du Jeu (this and the Third Man are probably my favorites)
The Grand Illusion
Breathless (French version, the American one is terrible)
Pierrot Le Fou

I'd also check AFI's "100 greatest films of all time" There a several lists like that from film magazines, maybe in genres, too.

on edit: forgot Sunset Boulevard, one of the best movies ever about movies. Some Like It Hot Is great as well. Like I said, I could go on and on...

for the vibe when it comes a calling...

one hasta have a Hitchcock (I prefer Spellbound or Rebecca but you can't go wrong with Vertigo, North by Northwest or Rear Window; or go more twisted with Psycho or The Birds)

an atmospheric sci-fi, even if just playing while you're cookin' or sorting out paperwork (2001: A Space Odyssey, Blade Runner or a great quiet slow overlooked one in Sean Connery's Outland)

a music-fun on-the-road film: Smokey and the Bandit, Thelma & Louise, O Brother Where Art Thou, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, etc
