Hmmm...
Something's amiss. It could be that whatever you used to JB your iPod last time is mucking it up. On the other hand, you may be making a mistake somewhere. Which one is difficult to assess without watching you go through the steps in person.
Here's yet another way to attack it:
Download a fresh copy of 1.1.4 firmware (I'm sure they're floating around). Select your iPod in iTunes. Hold CTRL (control) and click RESTORE (I assume you've done this before if you tried to install a pre pwnd firmware...if not, we've found your problem already). THEN, select the 1.1.4 you just downloaded, and restore from that. This should fix any problems from the last JB (especially if you used Ziphone).
With all of that done, do the EXACT SAME THING with the 2.1 firmware you downloaded. It should be fine. If not, you'll just need to suffer for a few days until a new winpwn is released. |

So, here is what happens:
I load the original, factory firmware on my ipod by having itunes go on the internet and download it straight from Apple. It puts version 1.1.5 on my ipod.
After it finishes rebooting, I shift click restore to browse for the custom firmware. I double click it and then I get an error with itunes.
Do I need to be in DFU mode?
Also, I'm reading that the ipod needs to be pwned already in order to load the custom firmware. |

OK, one problem sorted. Don't use 1.1.5. It doesn't work with anything. You need 1.1.4.
Go back to 1.1.4, and restore. THEN try to load the 2.1 file. You don't need to do anything apart from making sure your iPod is connected, iTunes is open, and you CNTRL click restore and select the appropriate file.
EDIT: everything will go much smoother from vanilla 1.1.4. The second part of the problem is, I'm talking about upgrading to 2.1 (that's the latest and greatest, and I think it is worth it). If you can't be stuffed though, you can always go with 2.02 or something, and there are plenty of guides out there to help. The most recent version of Winpwn will do it. |

You don't need to go back to 1.1.4. As I said before if you have iTunes 8, you CAN'T go back.
I have a 1.1.5. Just last night I upgraded to 2.0, then used the FREE 2.1 update from iTunes.
I'm now on 2.1.
OP: I'm confused about your firmware d'load. At first you said you had the factory firmware, then you referred to it as CUSTOM firmware. CUSTOM firmware is for people who have ALREADY jailbroke their iPod. Don't use CUSTOM RESTORE firmware if that's what you actually tried..
Go to demonoid and pick up the 2.0 firmware. If you need one, I'll give you an invite code.
http://www.demonoid.com/files/details/1547016/22638450/
Download it, but don't click on it.
Run iTunes, and connect your iPod.
On Mac, I pressed 'shift'+'option' and the 'update' button on iTunes.
(Maybe your mistake was pressing 'restore')
It took a while, but it worked. Then iTunes asked me if i wanted to update to 2.1.
After much trepidation, I'll be jailbreaking it tonight. |

That is what I'm trying to do. I'm trying to jailbreak it. Jesus h christ, why is this such a f-ing pain in the ass. I've softmodded xboxes and modded my PSP, and none of those were half as frustrating as jailbreaking this thing.
I want to jailbreak it, load firmware 2.XXX and I want to install cydia. winpwn won't work for me. It keeps f-ng up at the DFU stage. |

Wait. You're not making sense. Maybe it's just how you wrote, but there are some things you said that I don't get.
You don't jailbreak it first. First you upgrade the firmware. Then jailbreak it.
Another thing that I don't get, is what version of the firmware you tried to use. Custom firmware is only for ipods that have already been jailbroken and want to upgrade to higher firmware.
If you have never previously succeeded in jailbreaking it, then don't use custom firmware.
Somewhere in my weeks of research I came across some guy having problems with DFU.. Did you try googling DFU touch?

I finally got it to work with my computer at school.
I ran winpwn 2.5 and everything went flawlessly.
Looks like winpwn is very fickle when it comes to machines it works on. Ironically, my school computer is an old ass Pentium 3. |

Congrats! That's a new one to me, but hey, things happen.
I think there were 3 people talking in circles here simply because there are so many different JB methods, with different firmware issues, and, as in your case, hardware config issues it seems.
I've had so many problems in the past trying to assist mates, even over Skype, in JBing...and it fails about 50% of the time. All of these issues are easily sorted with iPod in hand.
Despite the frustration, I'm sure you've learned a lot along the way, even if you didn't need to! That'll only assist when the next time rolls around. Enjoy 2.1...I am! |

The Ziphone jailbreak is so easy. One click and it did everything automatically.
I just hope that pwn gets to that point. MAybe it'll happen with winpwn relases version 3.0 |

Yeah, it was easy. I used it once too. It was also FAR from perfect, and left me with a buggy firmware and performance issues.
I know you're running windows, and I've personally never used Winpwn, but Quickpwn (from the dev team, not that bogus one floating about) works pretty much exactly like Ziphone, but better.
