Ok, this is getting out of hand. I'm up 10kgs from where I was 1 1/2 years ago. Students have mentioned my weight gain twice in the past few days. One of my former students, whom I hadn't seen in over a year, felt compelled to tell me how I used to be handsome, but have now gained a lot of weight and don't look the same.
She's right... at least about me not looking the same.
What I need to do is get disciplined about what I eat. The problem is that I eat too much sugar crap, probably drink too much milk (assuming that's a bad thing -- even though it's low fat), and often find myself eating late because my wife gets home around 8 or 9 and usually cooks something.
It's at the point where I don't have the energy I used to have (yeah, pushin' 40, so that's not helping). I'm also damned busy, but that's just an excuse.
Ok, you nutrition experts -- please help! Throw your best Tofu delights and salad whatnot's my direction. Hopefully, I can get myself back into the gym as well.
I'd like to drop 10 kgs. Currently weighing-in at 103kgs naked. |

For exercise, strength training will shed pounds much quicker than cardio (unless you run for like 2 to 3 hours). Full body lifts are better than isolation exercises.
I really can't recommend Starting Strength enough, if you decide to lift. So detailed. Amusing, too.

For cardio, I'd do interval. Wind sprints. Also do a fun sport that's intensive. I do basketball.
For food, try lightly steamed vegetables with go chu chang. I was eating naeng myeon a year ago, but was avoiding the noodles (high glyc carbs) and eating the vegetables. I figured that I could make a salad with the go chu chang in the same way and I loved in. I eat tons of veggies, as well as lean proteins (tuna, egg whites, chicken breast, korean raw fish llike gwang-o, and tons and tons of shrimp-small sized so it's cheap). I don't use salt, dressins, anything. Just go chu chang. Call me crazy but I like this stuff, and whatever you put on tastes not like what it is (mainly) but like go chu chang.
Eat 4/5 small meals over the course of the day. I suck at this but this is what all the people recommend so who am I to argue.
I had a great day in the gym today. Doing full lifts (the squat is key) is really rewarding. Try it. |

yeah, lifting is good. However, if you're starting from scratch, cardio works almost as much. Small portions of rice, more protein, and invest 25000 won in a weighted jump rope if you don't have a gym yet. Do a moderate workout before eating anything in the morning-but make sure you get some protein and potassium inside you-bananas have a bit morenatural sugar, but worth it.
Don't be getting buckets of the KFC |

the only thing that works for me is being joined to a fitness club. What I mean is that you are not going to do anything productive on your own, despite all the "mountains" surrounding your home. Believe me , I have tried not going to the fitness club at least 4 times a week.
If you get in 50 minutes on the treadmill above your recommended heart rate and a couple of times lifting as much weight as you can, AND cutting down on what you stuff in your mouth , you will make progress.
When I get lazy, I go down hill fast.
BUT , it only takes a week to get back on track if you belong to a club. |

I've gained five kilograms myself since starting my new job. I'm still working out regularly, but the new schedule threw my eating habits out of whack for a while.
I'm making progress already though and this is what I'm doing:
- I found a running partner and we do interval sprints.
- I'm not eating any starchy carbs after noon. Fruits and vegetables, but grains like oatmeal, twenty grain rice (Costco) and whole wheat pasta (Hannam Mart) are out in the pm.
- I'm emphasizing compound lifts. Deadlifts and squats are the focus with weights, but bodyweight exercises like pullups, dips and one legged squats are also multi-joint and plenty difficult.
I'm also going to be going here for five weeks this winter:

Fatboy, here's my top diet tip:
Stop driving 8,450 calories of cheeseburgers, double lattes, cheese-ham-toast, cola, cider, beer, bulgogi and other shite into your stomach every day.
This goes for every other blubber-monster reading this too. Even the big-boned people. (In which case, get an x-ray and check your skeleton. I bet it aint 'big boned')
If anyone wants to join my special diet program it's called "f*-heart-attack-Atkins". It's the freest most pleasurable diet in the world. All you have to do is consume less than 3,500 calories a day. The rest is YOUR choice, no restrictions. Fill your boots. Join the diet program that works.
Oh yeah, if you wanta join the program you should PM me so that I can give you my address so you can pay me my $1,300 annual fee for 'harsh-love' dieting consultation. |

They don't get used. There is a newly renovated gym at the school, which I want to get back into again. |

In a lot of online advise I read, keeping a food journal is a big characteristic separating successful weight losses from strugglers.
There are many ways to do it, from just writing down what you eat, to weight watchers "points" plan, to some kinds of "deal a meal" where you start with cards for a perfect healthy day and deal them out in three meals and stick to that. I think any way of keeping a food journal is a good way.
Here's what I do (takes about a minute before/after each meal).
1. Jot down servings of food eaten.
- an apple is about 1 serving, right size meal is about 4, dinner with friends usually about 5 or 6 servings.
2. Jot down a health factor for each serving.
- give a 1 to fresh, uncooked, fruits and vegetables
- give a 5 to convenience store ice cream (what is that stuff?)
- meats, rice, bread go in between.
3. multiply the servings by each ones health factor, add them up, and try to keep that total number reasonable.
Just a way I like. Again, no bad way to keep a food journal. |

Create a calorie deficit in your diet through a combination of exercise and a little old fashioned put-that-cake-down.
Nothing simpler.
You will lose weight. |
