I'm not a defender of Bush, but the obvious response is:

Correlation is not causation.

I can't stand Bush, and never voted for him, but much of the deregulation that occurred happened under Clinton. Remember Greenspan's call to reduce "irrational exhuberance" whatever that meant? Investors started on this road under Clinton imhop.

Bush has made things even worse with his wars and spending, but he doesn't deserve total blame. At this point I actually think he's improved a bit, and if I had to choose I'd take another Bush term over McCain.

But is it merely coincidence? I'd like to see a list of bank failures for a few other 7 year periods, just for comparison.

Oil when Clinton was president was 20 dollars or less

Clinton enjoyed the benefit of the Soviet Union being down.

At the same time.

Bush got 100 $ oil

9-11

and an angry Russia.

Who got the better set of cards?

Joo, even a fool can win if he is dealt 4 aces. That is not the point. It's how well you play the hand you are dealt. 70% of the people feel that in most situations, Bush has not played well.

A big part of the current problem is the ideological 'free market' stand that most regulators Bush has put into place.

Ever heard of 'This American Life'? It's my favorite radio program. The show last week was on enforcers. Jump to the second half of the show to hear about the incompetence and malfeasance of the current SEC head...

9-11 wasn't an average situation

and Clinton was super lucky.

How is FDIC going to cover all the deposit losses when banks really collapse? It's impossible in reality to insure all deposits as FDIC does not have that much money so this presents a real problem is 1929 happens all over again. You can bet the rich will be taken care of first since they come first on the governments list of priorities despite having illegitimately engineered this huge boondoggled mess in the first place.

They will be wiped out when Washington Mutual collapses. The Treasury will have to foot the bill. The printing pressing will be in overdrive.

Which raises another good question, is that really a good idea?

My feeling is no.

If only I could print money when I ran out! I would finally be able to buy that nice sports car I've always wanted.

It is a bad idea (except that I have an account at WaMu! Sad ). Unfortunately, the insurance is already bought and paid for - the FDIC which insures all savings accounts up to $100,000. This is not like suddenly coming in and choosing to bail out Bear Stearns or AIG. They are already on the hook for this.
