|
|
I've just escaped my last bad hagwon job and am tying up the loose ends there. And then this came along:
A job offer to train Korean elementary school English teachers. I'd be working for the Gyeonggi-do education department.
It looks like a sweet deal on paper. 4 hours a day, housing, 2.6mil salary (not stated whether that includes housing allowance). I'd be sponsored with a short term c4 visa (4 months).
Anybody been involved in such a program? What was the work like? I'm a newbie in Korea (under one year) so is there any advice posters could give about such a position.
For me, the short term visa is better than a one year contract and I'd think it's a good reference on my resume. Your thoughts? |

C4s have a maximum of 90 days duration and typically you cannot get an extension for one.
This means you get an E2 or E7 (and potentially 1 year).

Will you be training them how to teach English, or just how to speak it? |

Isn't the training centre located in Pyeongtaek? I remember being offered a similar position in Pyeongtaek. |

It's actually in Anjune Myeong a little village on the outskirts of Pyeongteck. They used to force the teachers to live in these terrible domatories. I think its gotten better. Takes a long time to get to Seoul.
It's called the Younsuwon. They used to have skits. Until all the Korean teachers complained. It used to be part of EPIK. Nobody wanted to go there. They eventially started giving the NETS. their own private apartments. Their part of ETIK |

From my understanding it was more about teaching technique, which actually would be pretty interesting work.
It's in a village near Pyeongtaek? (no google results for the name). That sounds as exciting as pulling my toenails off. Part of ETIK? What is that? |

They usually hire between eight or six NET's. You specialize. They have one teacher who specializes in teacher training. They also have conversation classes where you would focus more on speaking ability.
If there's something specific you like to do like discussions dealing with cultural difference tell them. If there's a vacancy and the person leaving is doing the thing you like to do. Then you can easily take over.
The Supervisors discourage overlap. You might also get stuck teaching something like vocabulary and grammar. It's best to enquire beforehand and find out specifically what you'll be teaching. |

Not in that location, but yes I did.
The teaching was fantastic and I would happily still be doing it to this day if, 1) they didn't make me stay from 9 to 6 despite only teaching from 3 to 6.
2) they didn't make me come to work during the weeks when we had no classes. |
