Sorry if this is a dupe, if so, mods should merge. Maybe Koreans should print this news in Korean newspapers.

230,000 Koreans Illegally Staying in United States

By Kang Shin-who
Staff Reporter

Approximately 230,000 undocumented Koreans were residing in the United States as of January 2007, according to a report ``Illegal Alien Resident Population by the U.S. Homeland Security. The number of illegal Koreans has decreased by some 20,000 from a year earlier, yet Korea was the 7th largest country with illegal aliens in America.

The U.S. has seen a growing number of illegal immigrants _ 11.8 million last year, up from 11.3 million in 2006 and 8.5 million in 2000.

By country, Mexico is the leading country of undocumented immigration, with seven million, or 59 percent of the illegal population.

El Salvador came next with 540,000, followed by Guatemala with 500,000, and the Philippines and China, each with 290,000.

Koreans made up 2 percent of the undocumented population. Brazil showed the biggest increase of illegal residents, an 89 percent jump, followed by India with 81 percent and Guatemala with 74 percent.

By state, California was the leading state for illegal residents, with 2.8 million, or 24 percent of the total, followed by Texas with 1.7 million and Florida with 1 million.

Maybe because they like the U.S. better than their home country.

That figure is a drop in the bucket compared to Mexicans.

Hey OP, a big whopping 2%.

OMG!!! 2% of all illegal aliens in the US are Koreans. Oh the humanity!!!!!!! They are taking over all the jobs and stealing out women! Run for the hills!!!!!!!!!!!

300,000,000 people = populaiton of the US.

230,000 Koreans illegal.

Hmm...

230,000 / 300,000,000 = .07% of the population of the US.

It's a lot of people considering the small size/population of South Korea.

Plus, a bigger question to ask is why so many Koreans are in the US illegally? That's a question for the Korean government.

There are 290,000 Chinese people in the US illegally, while there are 230,000 Koreans in the US illegally.

Given the size and population of China versus South Korea, that's a large number of Koreans to be in the USA illegally.

Do you think that was the OP's angle? To me it was a, "why are they complaining about a couple thousand illegal teachers when there are so many....". Don't think you should be upset. Could be wrong, though.

Anyway, who the hell cares. It's America, good on the Koreans for trying to make it there.

Considering Korea's per capita income, I would say this number is quite high, and speaks volumes about the abysmal quality of life in this country (for the natives, we have it pretty good in comparison).

I favor kicking out all illegal aliens from the United States. I think you should be punished if you intentionally enter a country with the goal of living there illegally, and yes, that means Koreans, too.

For a developed country, 230,000 is extremely high. We'd expect lots of Chinese, lots of Mexicans, but Korea isn't a Mexico-like or China-like economy.
