I have some friends over from San Francisco at the moment and they wanted to stay in comfort so I brought them to the Tomgi Hotel and booked them into the VIP room as recommended by many people here for 110,000 Won a night.

Room was good as explained in other threads.

Next morning things went a bit pear shaped. They wanted to stay a second night and the hotel explained that their system was as follows:

The hotel wanted to store their bags downstairs and rent out the room by the hour (or 4 hour chunk) until 8pm.

If they want to keep their bags in the room or use the room between lunchtime and 8, then pay an additional 110,000 Won to hold it meaning the charge goes up to 220,000Won per day (not good value anymore)

Apparently this applies to all rooms and not just the VIP one.

So it boils down to this. If you want a short overnight with the GF, the Tomgi is not bad but if you want to stay for a few days choose somewhere else.

It is a love motel (even though it is called a hotel) but none of the other ones I stayed in had this system.

At hotels around the world it's amazing what services they can and cannot offer, and what discounts and price-gouging you can find.

When higher-class hotels offer rooms by the hour, however, it says something about why Korea will never be a major attraction for western tourists.

Its a love hotel. They make more money charging by the hour. A lot of the better places don't even take all night reservations until late evening.

Thats the way love hotels do it. You can't get a room to stay overnight until evening.

That sucks. I'm glad I've been stopped from renting a room to get a surprise when I walk into so called, "hotel motel." Usually if it's a love motel and you go without a Korean or don't speak Korean, they won't rent, because they know you're a tourist looking for a place to rent by the day to park your backpack.

It's too bad these hotels/motels don't indicate most often times that they are a love motel.

And then my school rented a love motel by the day and I stayed and parked my bags a week and a half when I arrived with no issues. I bet if you had a Korean speak to them, there would no issues.

Who exactly uses all these love motels? I mean what sort of people make up the percentages of those who stay there?

Is it primarily college students or other younger people (who still live at home) who go there to be with their girlfriends/boyfriends for the night?

Or is it older people having affairs?

And what's with all these love motels around mountain resorts?

i used to live near a string of love motels. i tended to see younger couples leaving during the day and earlier in the evening, then older drunk men, sometimes with young ladies on their arms, stumbling in and out as the hours got later.

as for the ones near the resorts, i've stayed in a number of them over the years and they're generally by the books. clean, reasonably priced, and often a better option than the "resort hotels."

Of course you can

When I got married I booked an entire floor for 2 weeks at 35.000 won per room, per day.

It is possible, but negotiating up front is important.

I know in Yeoksam/Gangnam station area, its impossible because they make a killing on the people coming in hourly.

Maybe an area with not so much foot traffic, you can negotiate somethign like that.

BTW, has anyone seen the prices at Jelly Hotel near Yeoksam station? like 250,000w for the VIP room.
