Tons of toxic Chinese food recalled

September 22, 2008
Koreas food safety agency said Sunday that since 2006 it has recalled and discarded around 41 tons of Chinese food imports that were found to contain bacteria, cancer-causing materials and other substances banned in food.

According to the Korea Food and Drug Administration, cookies imported from China last December were found to be tainted with cyclamate, a cancer-causing material, and cakes imported in October last year were found to contain substances banned in food.

This year, the administration recalled four different brands of Chinese confectionery products weighing 13 tons after a dangerously high level of toluene, a toxic chemical used to dissolve packaging ink, was discovered in the products.

The government has to drastically reinforce its safety checks on Chinese food imports in both customs and circulation, Rep. Lim Doo-sung of the ruling Grand National Party said.

The report came after thousands of Chinese babies fell ill and at least three died after drinking milk formula tainted with melamine, a substance banned in food, in the latest food safety scandal to hit the worlds most populous country.

The melamine scandal has reignited a phobia of Chinese foods among Korean consumers. Yonhap

Their feckin sick. Don't buy real China made. Canned mushrooms used to be made in America, but since they started making them in China about 5 years ago, they are sick where they taste like they're grown using human feces. Korea does very high quality work compared to China though I think their food and milk is nasty too. You think Korea is bad, try China....

So, are we going to see screaming kids marching against the Chinese trying to give Koreans an epidemic of cancer using hidden cyclamates, in an obvious attempt to depopulate the peninsula?

I would love to see that. It would be such poetic justice.

Know why?

Cyclamates don't cause cancer.

They are a harmless artificial sweetener sold in Canada.

Know any Canadians dropping like flies from diet soda induced cancer?

Korean scientists have no shame.

For some reason, Koreans think artificial sweeteners will kill you. Except for xylitol, which is actually just birch sugar, a natural sugar.

I wonder what brands of food they are talking about?

The article doesn't mention what they are.

Do we all have to guess? Are they keeping it a secret?

I guess US scientists also have no shame since the FDA refuses to lift the ban of cyclamates in the US. Rolling Eyes

Don't the Chinese make a lot of kimchi for the Korean market?

Don't blame American scientists. How do you think we know cyclamates don't cause cancer?

I dunno. But somehow you think you know more than Korean scientists and the FDA. Must be all those decades researching cyclamates that makes you such an expert.

Where are the mass protests against tainted Chinese-made food on the streets? How conspicuous that the anti-U.S. beef organizations that made a case about the dangers of U.S. beef are remarkably silent about Chinese food products that HAVE killed people.

The same reasons why Chinese students here were allowed to go ape $hit over pro-Tibet protesters with very little attnetioned paid to it, especially when compared to the other actions of foreigners in this country.

(yes I know the event was covered in the news and many netizens were outraged, however, there were no mass counter protests, nor were there any public calls on any weight for the expelling of all Chinese students)

Koreans are scared of China. Understandable is some regards.

All nations other than the US sell bad products? And if u don't believe it move to goddam North Korea.

Only the USA has the most inspected, examined, quality food products in the world?

It's just China bashing.

Why flame me? Why defend China when China has done something wrong?
Rolling Eyes Tell the Korean newspapers. Just posted an article that states the truth.

BTW, "rum jungle", did you miss the headlines about Chinese milk? Need a link?
