I'm sick of recruiters posting ads filled with misinformation.
Many of the Hagwon ad's mention "approximatly 15 national holidays" when only 6 fall on weekdays during 2009. So some newb has just been screwed out of "approximatly 9 holidays" , not to mention they are still just as tight with vacation.
Then here's an ad that caught my eye http://www.eslcafe.com/jobs/korea/index.cgi?read=33561 especially

Name and Number of subway station is Gwang Myeong station (748 )
10 stops away from Hong Dae or Shin chon (approx 20 min away by subway)
15 stops away from Kang Nam ( approx 30 min away by subway)
Shin chon and Kang nam are most popular downtowns in Seoul |
I decided to check up on that. According the SMRT website, it is 37 minutes to Sinchon, and 49 minutes to Gangnam... "approx 20 minutes" and "approx 30minutes" my foot!!.
What's even worse, is that Gwangmyeon is that station which sticks out from Siheung, and has a very INFREQUENT subway service. According the SMRT website, the transfer time at Siheung for the Gwangmyeong train is 35! minutes, which turns that Gangnam trip into an 85 minute trek.
Sure this isn't a huge deal. But when the recruiter can't even post accurate information on minor issues (which happen to misunderstandings which go AGAINST the teacher) how can one even trust them on bigger, more important issues. |

There's a redundant word in your thread title. |

Being a recruiter is a lot like being a salesman.
I've been a salesman, so I can tell you "polishing" the truth is no by any means a deterrent.
They will find ways to state facts, without the important details. I did all the time to my customers for a biomedical firm (I'll keep it anonymous). I was forced to tell customers that the chances of using my product would increase survival rates for the disease by 80%. When I did my own research I found that the chances of the product even being viable was as little as 20%. Even then the overall usage and sucess rate of the product was nominal.
I agree with you, it seems harmless but if someone does find out the reality of the facts, they will never trust the recruiter.
But, I can understand why they do it. When the only thing you can sell is a dull product, you have to polish it up a bit to feed yourself and family. |

My school itself has lied to the recruiters themselves and the recruiter does it's own lying in addition. All of us teachers have been told our area is only 20minutes away from seoul and 5 from Ilsan (we are in Gyoha, Paju). When in reality we are 1.5 hours from Seoul and 15~20 from Ilsan. They lied about housing, hours, changes, imporvements and holidays and they won't change citing the the fact it will be hard to get teachers otherwise.
We said be honest and teachers will stay longer, but that idea of long-term invesment means a lot of blank stares...huh?!!
Anyway, lying is common here as a way of getting what you want or not telling people what they do not want to hear. |

That's why I have no problem lying back to these types of people. If you look at it in a certain way, you can use some of these lies they tell to get away with certain things. |

My first school did a similar thing, filled with "misunderstandings". Telling me I was 30mins from Seoul...(right, maybe, maybe by KTX, and assuming that 1. I lived right by the station, and 2 the area was served by KTX), that there were 3 other foriegn teachers - oh sorry, we meant to say 3 other korean teachers...you are on your ace. Housing: 5minute walk (to the bus stop, then a 15 minute bus ride and then another 5 minute walk..) and I can go on.
Ezewong, I agree...recruiting seems just like sales. It's one thing to polish the story...or lie by omission and another to flat out lie. |

Koreans calculate subway commutes by taking the number of stops and multiplying it by 2.
They don't take into consideration for infrequent trains or transfer times. Sometimes you gotta walk a damn mile to transfer.
There is no excuse for the recruiter to not do their homework. But, these recruiters just get these open jobs from companies, and they post them ASAP so they can find a sucker to get paid the commission.
Once you sign on the dotted line, the recruiter gets their check and its no longer their problem. |

It's not malicious intent, merely stupidity. They do themselves a huge disservice when they tell so many lies. After all, it's disappointment and depression that make for midnight runs. If they were smart, they would learn to tell the truth and help set people up for success.
I'm in the middle of nowhere as a brand new teacher and they are fortunate to have someone like me. I am too stubborn to fail due to geography. |

Dull? Working in a foreign country and experiencing a different part of the world is dull?
Don't justify lying by calling this job dull. |
