I moved to Korea about 2 months ago. I'm teaching in Icheon at the Oh Sung Sik English Club. Fortunately, it's a pretty good job compared to alot of what I've heard. I'm a graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park with degrees in International Relations and East Asian Studies. This is actually my first time outside the United States or Canada.
Considering I've been here for two months, I've met surprisingly few people. I know 4 people in Icheon (only two of which speak English) and a friend in Seoul that lived in my dorm at college a few years ago. I haven't had anyone approach me and say anything more than "hello" and then go their own way (and that's only happened a few times). Icheon is mostly families from what I can tell, and all the people my age (22) seem to evacuate to Seoul whenever possible.
Anyway, I've enjoyed reading the posts on here for a few weeks now and might even enjoy doing one of the get togethers. Nice to meet y'all... |

unfortunately, it's going to be mostly up to you to meet people (rather than them coming to seek you out). that's just the way it is. living in a small town and working in a business w/ few foreigners makes it even more difficult.
join clubs, try to meet people online, go out alone and introduce yourself ... whatever it takes. invite your co-workers out and try to get them to introduce you to others, do private lessons, etc. it took me about 6 months to start meeting quality people. during my second year in korea, there were about 25 foreign instructors at my uni so that made it easy to socialize. |

The original poster said she is in Icheon (no N), which is a different city/town to Incheon. Incheon is much bigger and where the major airport is. Korean place names can be very confusing sometimes. |

Anyway, welcome to the board Ryleeys and enjoy your stay in Korea.
Living outside of the biggest cities can be tough, but once you are confident in buying bus/train tickets you can get out on weekends and see different places. The public transport is very cheap (as I'm sure you know), so make the most of it.
Cheers |

Just so you know, Icheon has a K2-League football (soccer) team: Icheon Sangmu (the national military squad). They finished second this season, losing the championship to Goyang (another Seoul satellite). |

I agree with "just because". The monkey is new to Korea and needs to get out and meet real people he can talk to in person. |

'fess up, you're just glad he's not kicking your butt on the "Gay or Stud" thread.
I'm joking.
I like him, the monkey has a way with words... |

Hey ryleeys, I know where you are coming from on the "people meeting" thing. When I first arrived in Korea, I was out in Seochu-gu and it might as well been Siberia. Really no western people and I was teaching kids, which meant minimal contact with anyone outside my school.
Then I switched schools (not an easy thing to do), and began teach adults in Chongno and living in Edae and the whole world seeme to open up. I guess what I am saying is if you are really up against a wall, you should consider moving into Seoul. |
