I'm responsible for 6 questions on each of the grade 1, and grade 2 midterms and finals.
One of my questions is a writing question, in which the students have to answer the question using a sentence containing, "that" or "which."

It's very simple:

A: Have you ever heard of the Jindo.

B: Of course I have.

A: Really? Tell me about it.

B: ______________________.


Now the Korean teachers are telling me that this is "very strange" because there can be so many answers. They're saying, "this is a test...there can only be one right answer!"

Of course, however, this is a language test. And, in a language, there isn't just one right answer all the time. I want the students to show me their knowledge and to show that they learned how to make a correct sentence using the structure. Annoying!

They want 1,2,3,4,5 with four wrong answers and one right one.

It's simply easier to mark a multiple choice test than a freer writing exercise. When you have classes approaching 40 sts a class do you really have time to individually sift through all the students responses? Save it for smaller groups, such as at a hagwon or after school classes.

A jindo is a dog. It is from Korea. It is yellow. It freezes its butt off in the winter time. It eats rancid kimchi and dog chow gruel. Its duty is to bark its head off when people walk in the road past its special jindo house. Only Koreans can own a jindo.

If you are teaching relative clauses (low intermediate level English), perhaps it would be better to just have two sentences and ask the student to combine them using a relative pronoun:

Jindos are dogs. They are from Korea.

"Jindos are dogs which/that are from Korea".

If I had to do a question like this, I would have to mark 600 of them.

This is the main reason why Korean school students dont do writing or speaking in class, and why exams in my school are answered on computer read cards, which require multiple choice.

Just finished proofreading the Grade 1 test. Bruuuuuuuuuutal. Grammatical and usage errors on 1/3 of the questions, and improper punctuation on nearly half. This is the test, by the way, that checks grammar and usage, yet the testmaker struggles with it. I was told that he doesn't want to make any changes to the test, even though students and parents have complained about the errors before. ja4089ru3q289j0.
